Sloclap, the team behind “Sifu,” has been rejoicing over the triumph of their multiplayer football game titled “Rematch.” In a chat with Edge Magazine (via GamesRadar), creative director Pierre Tarno shared that the idea for “Rematch” was actually developed prior to the release of “Sifu,” which came out in 2022.
Tarno stated that the plan for making “Rematch” was already in place even before the release of “Sifu”. Additionally, he mentioned that the studio isn’t overly cautious about taking risks, which may be why they were able to shift from creating action-based martial arts titles such as “Sifu” and “Absolver”, and instead move on to a multiplayer sport game like “Rematch”.
Instead of saying, “It wasn’t about ‘oh, Sifu did great – what’s next,’ he continued, pointing out that prototypes for Rematch were being crafted by a compact team at Sloclap while they were still developing Sifu. The studio opted to work on a game unlike any of their previous ones because, as Tarno explained, “sticking with safe bets is a recipe for disaster.” He believes that players are eager for fresh, unique gaming experiences.
In terms of finding inspiration from other game titles, it’s not hard to imagine how classic series like FIFA or modern favorites such as Rocket League could have influenced the creation of Rematch. Nevertheless, Tarno clarified that “these games are distinct titans in their respective genres, and they excel at what they do. Thus, our aim is to create something unique.

Instead, he felt that the distinct skill-based gameplay would captivate players enough for them to pay money to play it.
Tarno mentioned that he had never thought about free-to-play. One aspect he enjoys about creating games is the lack of a specific recipe for success, but instead, his belief is that the best approach – or perhaps the only way – to achieve commercial triumph is by crafting an exceptional game.
