Furi, a fast-paced bullet hell game developed by French studio The Game Bakers, first launched on PS4 in 2016 and quickly gained a dedicated following. It proved so popular that it was later made available on PS5 as well.
The story is now being adapted into a miniseries featuring Barty Shepherd and Yanick Ghanty, and will be available to stream starting November 8th.
Let’s be upfront: this looks pretty much like a fan film, and unfortunately, not in a good way. One viewer even compared it to the work of the comedy channel Mega64. That’s a tough comparison!
We’re not film experts, but the cameras and costumes clearly show this was made on a very small budget. The production company, Midnight Embers Productions, says they funded the project themselves.
To us, it lacks the neon flair of the source material.
While Furi had a polished cyberpunk look, this feels much more amateurish, like it was filmed in a backyard.
We support artists pursuing their creative ideas, but we’re puzzled by The Game Bakers’ decision to approve this. It probably won’t help the game gain attention, and might even have a negative impact.
Nevertheless, here’s the blub:
Meet Furi and The Rider, a warrior who has escaped a strange, magical prison after years of being held captive. Freed by an enigmatic being called The Voice, he now journeys through bizarre and dangerous lands, each controlled by a mighty Guardian who holds hidden secrets. As he fights these powerful enemies, The Rider is on a desperate quest to save his people from disappearing forever.
So, who’s planning on watching this? We’re probably going to skip it, to be honest.
