Aaliyah‘s story had barely begun before it was out of her hands.
However, it’s now 24 years since her tragic plane crash at just 22, and we’re still examining the profound impact she had on popular culture.
In a heart-to-heart chat with TopMob News mere months before my untimely passing on August 25, 2001, I found myself expressing, ‘With just my mom by my side, I’m 22 and I’ve achieved so much.’ Yet, amidst all the success, I couldn’t help but remind myself to cherish each fleeting moment.
As a lifestyle expert looking back, I can’t help but reflect on the incredible impact of Aaliyah’s debut studio album, Age Ain’t Nothing but a Number, released in 1994. This timeless masterpiece has sold over 6 million copies globally and was awarded double platinum certification, thanks to chart-topping hits like “Back & Forth” and “At Your Best (You Are Love)” that continue to resonate with listeners today.
As a devoted admirer recounting my story, I hail from the heart of Brooklyn, but was nurtured in the vibrant city of Detroit. By the tender age of eight, I had already embarked on a musical journey, serenading wedding guests. At ten years old, I shared the spotlight with none other than the legendary Gladys Knight on Star Search – an incredible opportunity as she was briefly united with Aaliyah’s uncle, the renowned producer Barry Hankerson, in the ’70s. My career took another leap at eleven when I graced the stage in Las Vegas.
In an interview on a New York morning show, Aaliyah mentioned that she was currently studying in high school as she excitedly discussed her upcoming debut performance at the renowned Apollo Theater, and proudly shared her excellent academic achievements with straight As on her report card.
Instead of going directly to college with the intention of studying music history as a major and engineering as a minor, she expressed her desire to remain involved in this field for as long as possible, as she truly enjoys it.
Born as Aaliyah Dana Haughton, the artist often referred to her brother and regular collaborator Rashad as her “dearest friend.
As an ardent admirer, I can’t help but reflect on the fact that even the most inspiring origin stories often bear tragic undertones. One early influence that significantly shaped Aaliyah’s sound was none other than R. Kelly, who masterfully crafted her debut album “Age Ain’t Nothing But a Number.
In December 2019, the 58-year-old individual, who is currently serving a total of 31 years in prison for crimes such as illegal sexual acts with minors, creating child pornography, and related offenses, was accused of giving a bribe to a government employee to receive a fake ID. This false identification allowed him to marry Aaliyah when she was just 15 years old.
In August 1994, Kelly, who was 27 years old at the time, escorted an individual claiming to be 18 years old (but later found out to be false), to a hotel in Rosemont, Illinois, for the purpose of marrying her on that date.
Back in February 1995, my world crumbled when the union I adored was dissolved, all at the insistence of her beloved parents. Then, years later on Good Morning America in 2019, Kelly’s legal representative shared a shocking revelation – the singer claimed he was oblivious to the fact that she was so young and innocent during our time together.
When an additional charge of bribery was added to a larger case of racketeering, the previously disgraced R&B singer found himself facing numerous counts of sexual exploitation and abuse in various courts, with these criminal accusations arising after the 2019 docuseries Surviving R. Kelly.
During Kelly’s long-awaited sexual assault trial in Brooklyn, it was testified by his former tour manager that the “I Believe I Can Fly” singer paid a staff member at a Chicago-area welfare office $500 to help secure a false ID card for him. The prosecution claimed that Kelly sought to marry Aaliyah, as this would prevent her from testifying against him concerning allegations of sexual misconduct with minors.
When Aaliyah took the stage at Apollo, whispers about her marriage situation began to surface, yet she appeared unfazed by it.
In an interview, she explained that since her line of work often leads to gossip, she chose not to give it much attention. Essentially, she allowed the talk to slide off without engaging, understanding that she doesn’t have control over other people’s words.
In 1994, Vibe acquired a marriage certificate which incorrectly stated that Aaliyah was 18 at that time, when in fact she was only 15 the following year. However, this error did not impede Aaliyah’s flourishing career in any way. On the contrary, her stardom continued to grow steadily afterwards.
For example, Slant magazine remarked that her cover of the Isley Brothers’ “At Your Best (You Are Love)”, from her debut album, demonstrated an impressive control over her voice and keen sense of harmony, which was well beyond her age.
She aimed for her second album to resonate similarly to the first, yet intended to infuse it with a stronger personal touch or style.
Aaliyah moved away from her association with Kelly and switched record labels from Jive to Atlantic. In the studio, she collaborated with producers Timbaland and Missy Elliott. Their work together led to the release of her 1996 second album titled “One in a Million,” which has sold around 8 million copies and is recognized as one of the most significant recordings from the ’90s by Rolling Stone magazine.
While maintaining a sense of enigma, Aaliyah usually kept her distance, a strategy more feasible back then, prior to the influence of social media. She frequently wore sunglasses during interviews and tended to share minimal personal information. Notably, a 2014 Lifetime biopic attempted to shed light on some of these mysteries but was met with criticism for its attempts, as it starred none other than Zendaya.
But Aaliyah also had the brightest smile.
In June 1994, she shared with MTV News that her casual wardrobe mirrors her relaxed demeanor. She often comes across as laid-back, mellow, and even a bit jazzy on camera, much like her true self. Interestingly, there’s not much distinction between her personality and her professional persona, making it easy because it truly reflects who she is.
“Be yourself,” she agreed. “That’s the best way to go, really.”
As a lifestyle connoisseur, I’d like to share my approach: Instead of hastily releasing album number three to jump on a trendy bandwagon, I chose to pause and savor life’s milestones. In 1997, I graduated from high school with straight A’s, a momentous achievement that marked the beginning of my adult journey. Subsequently, I made my acting debut on Fox’s police drama “New York Undercover”, graced the campaigns of Tommy Hilfiger, showcased my talent by performing the Best Original Song nominee “Journey to the Past” from “Anastasia” at the 1998 Oscars, and in 1999, I earned my first Grammy nomination for “Best Female R&B Vocal Performance” for “Are You That Somebody?” on the “Dr. Dolittle” soundtrack. Each step has been a testament to my commitment to quality and growth.
Next, she made her debut in cinema with the 2000 action-revenge film “Romeo Must Die”, starring martial arts expert Jet Li. This unexpected success grossed $91 million globally at the box office.
The New York Times called Aaliyah “a natural.”
romeo must die also gave birth to Aaliyah’s first number one hit and most renowned song, “Attempt Again.” She received another Grammy nomination for Best R&B Female Vocal Performance and won two MTV Video Music Awards, for the categories of Best Female Video and Best Video From a Movie.
The song ‘Try Again’ was featured on Aaliyah’s third album, which she largely recorded in Australia during 2000. At that time, she was acting as the lead character in the movie adaptation of Anne Rice’s ‘Queen of the Damned,’ starring Stuart Townsend as Lestat the vampire.
On July 7, 2001, Aaliyah released an album that showcased a more mature neo-soul style compared to her previous works as a teenager. This album marked the highest sales of her career with 187,000 copies sold in its first week.
Less than two months later, Aaliyah was gone.
On August 25, 2001, while filming her “Rock the Boat” music video in the Bahamas, she grew apprehensive and stepped onto a Cessna 402-B twin-engine plane at Marsh Harbor Airport on Abaco Islands, to return to Florida that very night.
In Damon Dash’s recollection during an appearance on The Real in 2016, he mentioned that prior to her departure, his girlfriend wasn’t fond of the plane they were referring to. He advised her against boarding it, but she was insistent, saying she had to fulfill a video commitment. Despite the complex circumstances, she felt obligated to take the flight.
A plane, found out by investigators to be overloaded by approximately 700 pounds beyond its safe weight limit, suffered an accidental crash and burst into flames only a short distance away from the runway shortly following takeoff.
8 other individuals, including the pilot Luis Morales III, makeup artist Eric Forman, hair stylist Anthony Dodd, security guard Scott Gallin, stylist Christopher Maldonado, Douglas Kratz (the director of video production for Virgin Records), and Blackground Records executives Keith Wallace and Gina Smith, tragically lost their lives along with Aaliyah. An autopsy revealed that Morales had residues of cocaine and alcohol in his body.
In a later legal resolution, the organizations responsible for managing the plane that resulted in Aaliyah’s death paid her family an undisclosed amount as part of a wrongful death claim.
But the loss rattled the music world far and wide.
Monica shared with Rolling Stone, just hours following the tragic incident at the PowerHouse Festival in Anaheim, Calif., that they had been friends since ’96. She described her late friend as an individual who was effortlessly likable. She wanted her family to understand that as artists, they are there for her support, but this situation transcends the music industry. Beyond her immense talent, she was a genuinely good person.
Ludacris was onstage when he found out, and he broke the news to the audience.
In an interview with Rolling Stone, Ja Rule stated, “The news left me feeling stunned.” He added that he initially found it hard to believe, but if someone is saying it, then it must be true. Despite this, the news lingered in the back of his mind during his performance. He deeply cared for the person and considered her a kind individual.
Aaliyah’s album initially entered the Billboard 200 at No. 2 but experienced a decline in sales later on. However, it made an impressive comeback and soared all the way to the top spot once again, marking a significant increase of 595 percent in its sales.
The director of the “Rock the Boat” video, Hype Williams, shared with MTV News a few days after an accident that she was indeed a very joyful individual. This woman radiated love and generously shared her true self with others. It seems not many truly grasped this about her. She possessed remarkable, graceful qualities as a person. It’s uncertain if her fans were privy to these aspects of her character.
Alas, Queen of the Damned, when it was released in February 2002, was damned upon arrival.
The Los Angeles Times observed that due to the tragic circumstances surrounding her death, audiences are mainly drawn towards Aaliyah’s character. However, her role, which featured minimal dialogue, seemed more like a modeling job than an acting opportunity. Meanwhile, the New York Times referred to Aaliyah as the one who was truly victimized by this dull production, praising the potential she demonstrated in Romeo Must Die.
Indeed, that film was just her second cinematic venture. Given the anticipation for her future performances, there were numerous chances ahead for her to display her on-screen talent.
On August 25, 2002, precisely one year following the accident, Jay-Z was giving a performance at DTE Energy Music Theater in Detroit. He momentarily halted the music around 10 PM.
The room grew dark, and a multitude of lighters were illuminated in the air as the song “Try Again” filled the speakers. He then moved towards the rear of the stage, where he linked up with his Roc-a-Fella co-founder Dash, for a heartfelt tribute moment.
“We love you,” Jay-Z said. “We miss y’all.”
