Originally a manga by Hideaki Sorachi published in Weekly Shonen Jump, Gintama is a hugely popular anime and manga series with a dedicated fanbase eagerly awaiting new releases even years after the original series ended. It’s celebrated for its unique combination of exciting storylines, silly humor, and endearing characters. As a parody, Gintama playfully references and honors many classic anime and manga, making it especially enjoyable for longtime fans. The latest film premiered in Japan on February 13th, 2026, and fans around the world are anticipating its release. Following the film’s debut, a well-known voice actor shared a message of support.
A recent message urged fans to see the new anime film in theaters, noting that one voice actor, Kensuke Tsuda, doesn’t appear in it at all. The message was posted on the anime’s official X account alongside a drawing by the author, Sorachi, showing his character alongside Tsuda. Tsuda voiced the minor character Shijaku in the Silver Soul Arc of the original anime. Even though he isn’t in the remake, Tsuda is helping to promote it. He’s also well-known for voicing popular characters like Nanami Kento in Jujutsu Kaisen, Kaiba from Yu-Gi-Oh!, and Nicolas from Gangsta. While there’s no news yet about a U.S. release date, an announcement is expected in the coming months.
What Will Happen in Gintama: Yoshiwara in Flames?

The anime originally covered this story in episodes 139-146, and it’s known for being one of the most exciting parts of the series. The new movie retells the same story, but with improved animation and the original voice cast. The plot takes Sakata Gintoki and his friends to Yoshiwara, a hidden district with its own set of rules, where the women who work there are often mistreated. A boy named Seita tries to pickpocket Gintoki, but discovers Gintoki has no money, and Seita’s own wallet is gone too.
Once Seita is caught, he reveals he’s trying to raise money to find the woman he thinks is his mother. Gintoki and his friends decide to help him, but they quickly find themselves facing opposition from Tsukuyo, the leader of a powerful group from Yoshiwara called the Hyakka. Things get even more complicated when Kagura’s brother, Kamui, unexpectedly shows up.
He’s a major villain in this story arc, teaming up with the corrupt people controlling Yoshiwara to gain more power. As Gintoki battles against this corruption in the red-light district, we learn more about Seita’s connection to it all. You can watch the original anime on Crunchyroll and Hulu, including the ‘Yoshiwara in Flames’ arc, to see the whole story.
