2022 marked my personal comeback moment as I watched Brendan Fraser shine anew in The Whale, which eventually led to him winning an Oscar. Since then, I’ve been thrilled to see him in Martin Scorsese’s ‘Killers of the Flower Moon’, and now, with the release of the Rental Family trailer, I can hardly wait to catch another glimpse of his talent on screen once more!
In contemporary Tokyo, the story unfolds around an American actor named Brendan Fraser, who is seeking meaning in life. He stumbles upon an unconventional job opportunity – working for a Japanese agency that rents out family members to strangers for various roles. As he delves deeper into his clients’ lives, he develops authentic relationships that challenge the boundary between acting and genuine emotions. Grappling with the ethical dilemmas of his work, he rediscovers his purpose, sense of belonging, and the profound value of human connections.
Searchlight Pictures introduces RENTAL FAMILY, a film directed, co-written, and produced by Hikari (known for “Beef”, “Tokyo Vice”, and “37 Seconds”), with Brendan Fraser joining an ensemble cast that includes Emmy® nominee Takehiro Hira (“Shogun”), Mari Yamamoto (“Pachinko,” “Monarch: Legacy of Monsters”), veteran actors Akira Emoto (famous for “Lovers Lost”, “Shin Godzilla”, and “Dr. Akagi”) and newcomer Shannon Gorman.
Rental Family is in UK cinemas in January 2026
