Even though there have been numerous delays in the release of “Replaced” since its initial announcement, it appears that the game is moving forward and nearing its launch. In a recent interview with IGN, which you can view below, Sad Cat Studios co-founder Igor Gritsay shared additional information about this visually stunning side-scrolling game, and even presented some never-before-seen gameplay footage.
During the interview, Gritsay discussed the studio’s choice to adopt a blend of 3D and pixel art for the game Replaced. He explained that this decision stemmed from the studio’s ambition to create a visually captivating game, yet they found it financially challenging to meet AAA-level production standards. Interestingly, while the studio anticipated that this artistic approach would be less complex, it turned out to be quite demanding, as he humorously added, “spoiler alert, it wasn’t easy.
He mentioned that games similar to Inside, like Little Nightmares and others of that genre, are not common. He explained that it’s challenging for games, even those in 3D, to be presented cinematically due to the complexity of composition. However, their choice to use pixel art made things more difficult because creating effective camera work that doesn’t disrupt the 2D sprite illusion is quite labor-intensive.
In this game, players assume the character of an AI named R.E.A.C.H., delving into the world to unearth hidden truths. A significant part of the gameplay involves traversing previously settled locations and interacting with diverse characters who are integral to the narrative.
The gameplay in Replaced boasts a cinematic touch, featuring dynamic camera angles tailored to each scene, as well as emotionally charged scenes skillfully lit and set against intricate backdrops. These elements contrast beautifully with the game’s character designs, which feature pixel art.
The primary setting of the game is vividly depicted as Phoenix City, a cyberpunk dystopia characterized by extreme income disparity. Within this world, there exists a segment of society labeled “disposals,” individuals who have had their organs harvested by corporations and then discarded outside the city limits. In essence, the story of Replaced predominantly unfolds within Phoenix City, enclosed by a surrounding wall.
The video provides a sneak peek into the platforming elements of the game Replaced, depicting the main character navigating through debris while maintaining balance to avoid falling into a seemingly sewage-filled river. It additionally showcases combat sequences, where players can enjoy a blend of ranged and melee attacks, with wave after wave of enemies approaching. Besides traditional gunfights and hand-to-hand combat, players will benefit from defensive strategies such as evasive maneuvers, like dodging.
The interview concludes by providing a glimpse into the diverse array of adversaries, ranging from brutal underground gangs, employing more wild tactics, to heavily armed and armored soldiers, who are not only equipped with firearms, but also don bulky protective gear.
As a gaming enthusiast, I’m super excited to share that I’ll be diving into the world of “Replaced” soon! This action-packed adventure is set to drop later this year and will be available on PC, Xbox One, and the next-gen Xbox Series X/S. Can’t wait to join the fun!
