The Resident Evil series, developed by Capcom, boasts one of their largest fanbases, and there’s plenty for them to look forward to in the near future. In 2022, fans can expect “Resident Evil Requiem” and a mobile game titled “Resident Evil Survival Unit”. To cater to console and mobile gamers, Capcom has got their bases covered. However, for arcade enthusiasts, they have good news too! Not only is there an upcoming Resident Evil arcade game in development, but it’s currently playable as well!
According to IGN’s report, a potential test cabinet for a new game titled “Resident Evil 2: Dead Shot” has been found at Namco Funscape, a UK-based arcade. This game seems to be a joint project between Capcom and Bandai Namco. Unlike the original Resident Evil 2, this version is designed as a light-gun shooter game. IGN got an early play of the game and mentioned that the initial two missions are accessible from the start, with a total of five missions in the game. Similar to the console versions of Resident Evil 2, Dead Shot follows the characters Leon S. Kennedy and Claire Redfield.
If you’ve ever played any iteration of Resident Evil 2, you’ll have a fair understanding of what Dead Shot offers. The game unfolds in well-known areas across Raccoon City, and the adversaries are a mix of zombified humans and canines. As IGN points out, the game seems to draw inspiration from the Resident Evil 2 remake, which came out for PS4, Xbox One, and PC in 2019, regarding its visual aesthetic.
Resident Evil has a rich background involving light gun games, dating back to the release of “Resident Evil Survivor” in 2000. Over the past two and a half decades, numerous light gun games derived from this franchise have hit the market, including on platforms like Nintendo Wii. Given the enduring popularity of one particular Resident Evil game, it seems fitting to create an arcade version. This could potentially attract new fans to the horror series, or at least offer a thrilling way for fans to revisit the narrative of “Resident Evil 2” in an arcade environment.
It’s unclear how long the test version of Resident Evil: Dead Shot will be accessible at Namco Funscape, and there’s no information yet about a potential widespread release. Given the success of the franchise, it seems unlikely that this game won’t be released more widely, but unexpected events do occur. In the meantime, enthusiasts of the series living in or near the UK might want to check if they can play the light gun game while it’s still available.
