A City Unlike Any Other

Before the story of Resident Evil began, Raccoon City seemed like any other average-sized town in America. It was a center for business and largely thrived thanks to the Umbrella Corporation.

The people of this city weren’t directly involved in the organization’s secret and unethical work, including the development of dangerous biological weapons, but they were the ones who ultimately paid the price when everything went wrong. Before becoming the zombies that caused so much fear, they were just ordinary people living their everyday lives.


 

Umbrella Corporation had a deep and lasting impact on the city, becoming a major employer and helping people establish their lives there. While seemingly benevolent through job creation and a sense of community, it subtly controlled things from behind the scenes, building a powerful legacy that continues to shape the overall story of the franchise.

Umbrella Corporation is infamous because it created the conditions for all the horrors we’ve faced over the years. By secretly building a network of labs and facilities throughout Racoon City, they essentially paved the way for the T-Virus to spread so quickly.

Looking back at Umbrella’s impact on Raccoon City, it seems the city was destined to fall. Its trusting dependence on the Umbrella Corporation ultimately led to its destruction, transforming it into a chaotic and desperate place – and the setting for the heroic battles of Resident Evil.

The terrors of Resident Evil are especially disturbing because they were all created by humans. Raccoon City is central to revealing these horrors, and its ruined state in each game emphasizes its importance. It’s more than just a setting; it’s what allows the franchise’s scares to rank among the best in the horror genre.

Other games in the Resident Evil series have also done a great job of highlighting the franchise’s unique atmosphere, like Resident Evil Village. But the city isn’t just important because of its style; it truly feels like a living, breathing place.

The City That Couldn’t Sleep

We also remember being terrified when we first saw the RPD Hall and Kendo Gun Shop, and the chaos of fighting Nemesis in the subway and at the clock tower. And who could forget the eerie Raccoon City Zoo and the unsettling Dead Factory?


 

Before the T-Virus outbreak on the Ecliptic Express, these locations would have been much easier to reach. However, after the disaster in Raccoon City, the city became a major hindrance – both for those fleeing its destruction and for the heroes trying to prevent it.

Raccoon City felt heavy with fear and the promise of danger, a feeling central to every Resident Evil game. The city’s atmosphere was bleak, with a constant sense of dread lurking around each corner. While rain fell on the streets, it highlighted the unnatural destruction all around – burned-out cars, fires, wailing sirens, and boarded-up buildings all showed how quickly normal life had fallen into chaos.

Raccoon City wasn’t a spooky, fantastical place like the castle in Resident Evil Village. It felt like a real city, despite being fictional, making it a perfect setting for the game’s horror. The city felt familiar and relatable, which is why the story was so captivating and impactful.

Inspiring The Best and Worst of Resident Evil

Honestly, thinking back on all the crazy stuff that happened in Raccoon City is probably why it sticks with me so much. Like, that one time when…

The Resident Evil police department’s shift from a place of safety for survivors to a prison they frantically tried to leave is a key example. Similarly, the streets changing from lively centers of life to dangerous battlegrounds where humans were clearly outmatched is another.

The creatures haunting the city’s streets are especially disturbing because they were once regular people with lives and aspirations. They became monsters because a powerful, greedy corporation saw them as expendable, and it’s heartbreaking to imagine how different their lives could have been if they hadn’t lived here.

As a huge fan, what really got to me about Raccoon City was how the environment itself felt like an enemy. You’re stuck in these tight spaces – hallways, alleys, streets blocked by fire – and it feels like the city is actively trying to kill you alongside all the zombies, Lickers, and Hunters. Every corner you turn brings a new, terrifying threat, and it really drove home just how devastating this outbreak was for everyone who lived there.

Raccoon City vividly showed the personal impact of a man-made disaster. The environments and the few survivors you met highlighted the desperation of those who lived through the outbreak. These ordinary people bravely banded together, doing everything they could to escape the horrific situation and the dangers it presented.

 

Despite all the destruction, Raccoon City is also remembered as the birthplace of gaming legends. The city’s downfall allowed some of our most beloved heroes to emerge, offering a glimmer of hope during a terrifying crisis.

Leon’s courageous actions to help people coincided with Claire’s urgent quest to find Chris Redfield, a strong and capable individual. Meanwhile, Alyssa’s work to understand the cause of the outbreak continues to impact the series, and now her daughter is stepping up as a promising hero in her own right.

Jill Valentine’s struggle to escape her enemies, along with Leon’s rescue of both her and Claire from the terrifying Mr. X, perfectly illustrates how the city brings out both the best and worst in people. The crisis fuels conflicts between those pursuing their own goals and those with more selfless intentions. Throughout it all, a feeling of desperation hangs over everything, driving the actions of the few who attempt to make a difference.

Honestly, Raccoon City could have just been a backstory dump for the whole series if the developers hadn’t done such a good job. What really makes it terrifying isn’t just the zombies, it’s seeing everything through the eyes of people genuinely trying to survive, making tough choices, even bad ones. It felt like the T-Virus was the spark that set everything ablaze, and the city was the fuel.

A Homecoming of Sorts

Returning to the story of Raccoon City with Requiem feels strangely familiar, like revisiting cherished memories. Exploring the events that led to the city’s downfall will likely offer a fresh perspective, making us realize just how terrible things were – or even worse than we remembered, now that we have the benefit of hindsight.

This could be a great chance for the series to shine in a setting it knows well. We really hope that happens, and that we can return to a location that’s important to many of the main characters, including the newest one.
