While Resident Evil Requiem featured a new character alongside Leon S. Kennedy, it seems the developers originally planned for a larger team-up of familiar faces. Industry insider DuskGolem shared (via Reddit user AashyLarry) that data miners found evidence of a third playable character who would have temporarily joined Leon or Grace Ashcroft.
A character file labeled “Jill_Support” suggests that Jill Valentine was once intended to appear in Resident Evil Requiem. It appears she was later removed from the game’s programming, leaving a placeholder for a specific cutscene. The game’s data also contains traces of Ada Wong, car-based gameplay, and missions that were cut from the final game quite late in the development process.
According to data analysts, the game’s code reveals evidence that a character named Jill was originally intended to appear in certain cutscenes, like the fight before the final boss. They discovered remnants of her programmed location, labeled ‘Jill_Support,’ suggesting she was later removed from the game, leaving behind unused code markers.
Okay, so this new info totally reminds me of stuff people were saying way back in November 2024. There were rumors that the next Resident Evil game, supposedly called Requiem, would team up Leon and Jill. People were also hoping Chris and Barry would be back, and even thought Rose Winters from the Shadows of Rose DLC might play a part. It’s cool to see those early whispers potentially turning out to be true!
Back in 2024, there were reports that Capcom was planning an open-world design for Resident Evil Requiem. However, the final game didn’t follow through with that idea, instead largely sticking to the traditional Resident Evil gameplay experience.
Capcom’s Resident Evil Requiem has been a huge success, selling over 5 million copies in its first week across PC, PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X/S, and Nintendo Switch 2. This makes it the fastest-selling game in the series, surpassing the launch sales of Resident Evil 6 (4.5 million copies), as well as Resident Evil 2 Remake and Resident Evil 4 Remake.
A new report from Dusk Golem suggests Capcom will be reviewing the future of the Resident Evil series. They’ll be looking at sales numbers and player data for Requiem, the Resident Evil 4 Remake, and the potential remake of Code: Veronica. Because Code: Veronica is currently predicted to release in early 2027, this internal discussion at Capcom is likely to happen in the latter part of next year.
While you wait, you can read our review of Resident Evil Requiem, where we gave it a 9/10 score. We also discuss how well the game portrays Raccoon City and why the combat is both challenging and exceptionally well-designed.
