Capcom has been emphasizing that their upcoming title, Resident Evil Requiem, will offer a thrilling rollercoaster-like experience, blending terrifying moments with other elements to prevent player exhaustion. In an interview with GamesRadar, game director Koshi Nakanishi discussed the importance of carefully pacing the scary parts in horror games for an engaging and less overwhelming gaming experience.
During the interview, Nakanishi discussed the distinct strategies Capcom employs for various Resident Evil series. He highlighted that the latest releases, Resident Evil Village and the remake of Resident Evil 4, lean more towards action-packed gameplay while preserving horror aspects. In contrast, Resident Evil: Extinction is expected to diverge significantly from these two games.
Nakanishi stated that the latest titles in the Resident Evil series, specifically the remake of Resident Evil 4 and Village, lean more towards action. In contrast, he described Resident Evil Requiem as distinct, resembling earlier titles such as Resident Evil 7 or the remake of Resident Evil 2. Essentially, he considers it a return to the classic style of Resident Evil, with an emphasis on exploration, backtracking, and other traditional gameplay elements.
In Resident Evil Requiem, you’ll find all the beloved essential elements from the Resident Evil series, including action, exploration, problem-solving, managing a limited supply of items, and we’ve added our unique touch to create an engaging game atmosphere.
In discussing the planning of horror scenes for the movie “Resident Evil: Extinction,” Nakanishi emphasized the importance of balancing the horror elements, drawing inspiration from the remakes of “Resident Evil 7” and “2”. He pointed out that relentless escalation of fear can leave players fatigued and in need of relief or catharsis. This means creating a balance between intense, scary moments and periods of respite for the player to catch their breath.
In simpler terms, when discussing “Resident Evil 7” and “2”, it was noted that these games follow a common design pattern within the series. This pattern involves maintaining high levels of horror throughout the game, but since it can become overpowering, there’s a need for a dynamic balance. So, the game features intense, terrifying sequences followed by less frightening moments like peaceful exploration or action-packed combat to provide relief and catharsis. Gradually, the game brings back the horror element to keep the player engaged and experiencing the full spectrum of emotions.
In the world of Resident Evil, we follow familiar practices. However, this time around, a novel system is introduced, which I’ll discuss further at a later date. In terms of tension and release in the narrative, I aim to stretch out these elements more than ever before, creating an exhilarating ride through the series’ various aspects. I can hardly wait for audiences to grasp what I mean by this roller coaster-like experience!
The game titled “Resident Evil Requiem” is currently under development and will be available to play on PC, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X/S by February 27, 2026.
