Resident Evil Requiem Director Confirms Development Began 6 Years Ago “On A Small Scale”

The development of Resident Evil Requiem has been quite a journey, and it’s not just about the game’s storyline (and for the record, The Darkside Chronicles is a crucial part of it!). There have been reports for years that the game was restarted to focus more on traditional survival horror and less on open-world or multiplayer features. But just how long has this version of the game been in development?

According to director Koshi Nakanishi in an interview with PlayStation Blog Japan (as reported by GamesRadar+), the game’s initial development started small around six years ago. The version players are now experiencing took shape about three years ago, which likely allowed the team to easily shift its focus to a single-player game.

It’s understandable there might be some confusion since Resident Evil Village came out in 2021. Nakanishi explained that development began after the story seemed to wrap up for Ethan in Resident Evil 7, leading into the eighth main game, Resident Evil Village. Meanwhile, Morisama Sato directed Village, allowing Nakanishi to concentrate on Requiem.

Both games heavily influenced the environmental design of the next installment. However, the development team decided to set the new game in Raccoon City because players wanted a return to the original storyline. Nakanishi admits the previous titles felt separate from the established lore and explains the team wanted to reconnect with that core narrative.

We appreciate the positive reception to Resident Evil 7 and Resident Evil 8. However, those games were intentionally designed as separate stories from the events leading up to Resident Evil 6. That’s why we started working on this new project – we felt it was time to revisit and continue that original storyline.

The new game, Resident Evil Requiem, comes out on February 27th. Unlike past games in the series, there won’t be a free demo available beforehand. Despite this, pre-orders have been surprisingly strong, and Capcom anticipates the game could generate record-breaking revenue.
