With the upcoming survival horror game *Resident Evil Requiem* still in development, director Koshi Nakanishi and producer Masata Kumazawa have addressed recent rumors, including speculation about Leon Kennedy being a playable character. In an interview with The Gamer, Kumazawa explained that fans often treat unconfirmed rumors as facts, which can be frustrating for the development team.
A lot of fan disappointment stems from believing unconfirmed rumors and then feeling upset when those rumors don’t turn out to be accurate in the final game.
Kumazawa explained that people often treat rumors as facts when discussing their work. He asked everyone to remember that what they’ve officially revealed is all they can share at this time. He understands people get upset, but it’s frustrating because the team never made promises, and the widespread belief in these unconfirmed theories creates unrealistic expectations.
Kumazawa and Nakanishi addressed the mysterious hooded figure featured in the trailers for *Resident Evil: Requiem*. Many fans have guessed this figure might be a returning character from past games, but the duo firmly denied this, stating it’s a completely new addition to the story. Unfortunately, they didn’t offer any further information about who this character is.
Fans have been guessing that the mysterious hooded figure is a returning character, suggesting various possibilities. However, Nakanishi and Kumazawa explained that they don’t always want to rely on surprise appearances from past characters. They confirmed the figure is actually a completely new character created specifically for this story arc – a detail they hadn’t revealed before. They hope this clarifies their approach to the game’s narrative.
During Tokyo Game Show 2025, the developers discussed Leon Kennedy and acknowledged some fans were upset he hadn’t clearly handed the lead role to a new character. Nakanishi and Kumazawa joked that they’d consider this feedback. However, they clarified that *Resident Evil Requiem* isn’t intended to be a story about Leon passing the torch to someone else.
We haven’t fully decided on the direction of future games in the series, but completely restarting the story and ignoring everything that came before seems unlikely. We also don’t want to keep relying on the same characters for every new game, and that’s why we created Grace.
I’m so excited! Capcom just announced that *Resident Evil Requiem* is coming to PC, PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X/S, and even the new Nintendo Switch 2 on February 27, 2026. What’s really cool is that they said the Switch 2 version wasn’t part of the original plan – it’s a great surprise for Switch fans like me!
