Capcom has revealed details about the gameplay in Resident Evil Requiem, which will feature both horror and action elements, experienced through the perspectives of two main characters: Grace Ashcroft and Leon S. Kennedy. In a recent interview with DenNicoFamiGamer (reported by GamesRadar), director Koshi Nakanishi explained that this version of Leon will be significantly more aggressive and violent than his portrayals in Resident Evil 2, 4, and 6. Nakanishi described Leon as driven by a “ruthless anger” and said the game will explore his jaded and world-weary outlook.
The game will feature a return of the character Leon, and the development team spent a lot of time considering how he would evolve as a person and what his motivations would be. This version of Leon is a hardened veteran, marked by years of conflict, and carries a simmering rage.
The intense anger of the character Leon was shown in Resident Evil Requiem through his use of an ax as a weapon. According to Nakanishi, this surprisingly violent choice was deliberate and might even lead players to question Leon’s state of mind. He confirmed this was a planned part of the character’s portrayal.
Nakanishi explained that Leon’s primary weapon in this game—an axe—reflects a shift in the game’s approach. The developers want players to question Leon’s violent actions, even feeling disturbed by his aggressive use of the axe. The goal is to create a sense of unease and make players react to his brutality, thinking, ‘What’s gotten into Leon?’
It seems early ideas for Resident Evil: Requiem included more frightening gameplay sections for Leon. However, the developers ultimately decided against making Leon appear scared or weak, believing fans wouldn’t want to see that side of the character.
Nakanishi explained they initially attempted to create a truly scary game featuring Leon, but they worried players wouldn’t believe in a hesitant or fearful version of the character. This concern was the main reason they moved away from that idea.
According to Nakanishi, the two main characters, Grace and Leon, will offer very different gameplay experiences, drawing inspiration from past Resident Evil games. Grace’s sections will focus on creating a suspenseful, scary atmosphere, similar to Resident Evil 7 and the Resident Evil 2 remake. Leon’s gameplay will be more action-packed, like the Resident Evil 4 remake. The game is designed so that each character’s sections build and then relieve tension, creating a balanced experience overall.
Nakanishi also explained that the gameplay experiences of Grace and Leon are connected. If one character defeats enemies in an area, those enemies stay defeated when the other character enters. The developers will need to carefully balance this feature with the limited resources Grace has access to. Nakanishi believes this interconnectedness will make the game more replayable, encouraging players to think strategically about which enemies to eliminate and when to save ammunition.
Resident Evil Requiem is coming to PC, PS5, Xbox Series X/S and Nintendo Switch 2 on February 27.
