Resident Evil Requiem Originally Featured a Horror-Oriented Expiernece for Leon, Says Director

During its recent showcase, Capcom shared several new details about the upcoming survival horror game Resident Evil Requiem. The presentation also included comments from game director Koshi Nakanishi, who explained how the gameplay will differ depending on whether you’re playing as Leon S. Kennedy or Grace Ashcroft.

The gameplay for Grace will feel similar to Resident Evil 7 and the Resident Evil 2 remake, with a strong emphasis on horror. Leon, however, will play more like a traditional action hero, delivering the intense, thrilling experience of the Resident Evil 4 remake.

According to Nakanishi, the contrasting gameplay experiences for Grace and Leon are intentionally structured to create a cycle of suspense and relief. He explained that each character’s section is designed to achieve a perfect balance between building tension and providing release. Originally, the developers considered making Leon’s part much more focused on horror, but they ultimately decided against it. They realized players wouldn’t expect to see a hesitant Leon after everything he’d faced since his debut in Resident Evil 2.

Nakanishi explained they initially attempted to create a truly scary game featuring Leon, but they worried players wouldn’t accept seeing him as a fearful character. This concern was the main reason they changed direction.

At the recent showcase, Capcom revealed that the Leon character players will control in Resident Evil Requiem has experienced difficult events, including those from Resident Evil 6. The game begins with Leon still working for the DSO. He’ll also have a new weapon – a tomahawk – and a range of impressive combat abilities.

Grace will rely on making fast choices in dangerous situations – deciding whether to fight or escape. To help her survive the zombies in the new game, she’ll have access to a crafting system. This lets her combine items with infected blood to create powerful weapons, such as a Special Injector that prevents corpses from evolving.

Capcom revealed a special Nintendo Switch 2 Pro Controller inspired by Resident Evil Requiem at their showcase. It will be available when the game launches on February 27th and will cost $99.99. The controller features a unique design resembling a newspaper with headlines about events from the Resident Evil series. Additionally, Capcom is collaborating with Nintendo on a new amiibo figure of Grace Ashcroft, planned for release in Summer 2026.

The new game, Resident Evil Requiem, is launching on PC, PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X/S, and Nintendo Switch 2. On the same day, Resident Evil 7 Gold Edition and Resident Evil Village Gold Edition – complete with all downloadable content – will also become available on the Nintendo Switch 2.
