Capcom has explained that Resident Evil Requiem is being created to be enjoyable and understandable even for players new to the series. But the game will also include hidden details and nods to previous titles, giving dedicated fans a lot to discover. Producer Masato Kumazawa discussed in an interview with VGC how important it is to find the right balance between including these Easter eggs and keeping the game accessible as a standalone experience.
Kumazawa explained that they aim to strike a balance between rewarding longtime fans with enjoyable Easter Eggs, lore connections, and references, while also ensuring the game is accessible to new players. “We don’t want players to feel like they need to research the series beforehand to fully enjoy the game,” he said. It’s important to us that everyone can appreciate the game without feeling like they’re missing out because they aren’t familiar with the lore.
However, when playing the game, he pointed out that new players will still be able to fully understand and enjoy it, while veteran fans will get even more out of the experience. They’ll appreciate the references and connections to the game’s history, allowing them to enjoy it even more thanks to the increased detail – he estimated they’d enjoy it 150%.
“While I won’t detail the extent of Raccoon City’s presence in the game, if you’re unfamiliar with the setting, you can still experience it as a horror game in a destroyed city and fully enjoy the story,” he explained.
If you’re already familiar with the series and pick up on all the connections, backstory, and subtle clues, I think you’ll absolutely love it – it adds a lot of depth. However, we didn’t want to make understanding the previous events or the timeline essential to enjoying the game. We want it to be accessible even if you’re new to the lore.
Issues like these often begin to surface for game studios that have been developing long-standing franchises without restarting them, and with a consistent storyline across all their titles. To give you some background, the first Resident Evil game was released way back in 1996 for the PlayStation. Since then, the series has continued the same narrative, and familiar characters frequently reappear. For instance, Chris Redfield, a main character from the original Resident Evil, most recently appeared in 2021’s Resident Evil Village, which is currently the latest installment in the series.
Considering how much the story of Resident Evil focuses on surprising twists and secret plans by powerful, unethical companies, the series always has a lot of hidden background information for players to follow. For example, even the new main character in Resident Evil Requiem, Grace Ashcroft, is connected to the past – she’s the daughter of a character from the PS2 spin-off games Resident Evil Outbreak and its sequel, Outbreak: File 2.
While we wait for more news, Resident Evil Requiem will be released on PC, PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X/S, and Nintendo Switch 2 on February 27, 2026.
