Early previews of Capcom’s Resident Evil Requiem are very promising. Good news for players without high-end PCs: the game’s director, Koshi Nakanishi, has confirmed that the upcoming PS5 Pro will fully support ray tracing.
In an interview with PlayStation Blog Japan, the developer explained that the game will run at 4K resolution and 60 frames per second with ray tracing turned on. Players who want even smoother gameplay can disable ray tracing to achieve frame rates between 90 and 120 FPS, depending on their display.
Nakanishi acknowledged that achieving peak performance takes considerable effort, but he was impressed with the console’s ability to deliver a high frame rate. He explained that once you experience the smoother visuals, going back to a standard 60 frames per second doesn’t feel as good. He believes this is because the increased frame rate provides a more immersive and detailed experience, effectively changing how the game feels.
While path tracing generally looks best on PCs, and can potentially achieve even smoother performance with new technologies, Capcom’s ability to deliver 4K graphics at 60 frames per second with ray tracing on less powerful hardware is remarkable. The key question now is whether the PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X can match this, even if it means running at 30 frames per second.
The new mobile game, Resident Evil Requiem, comes out on February 27th. You can find more details here. Producer Masato Kumazawa recently confirmed the game won’t be open-world, and another developer, Nakanishi, compared its two different gameplay modes to sushi – a surprisingly fitting comparison!
