Resident Evil Requiem Short Film Highlights the Tragedy of Raccoon City (and Hints at What’s to Come)

It’s exciting to learn that Zach Cregger, known for his work on Weapons, is involved in a new Resident Evil movie. However, Capcom consistently delivers quality content, and they’ve just released a short film called “Evil Has Always Had A Name” for Resident Evil Requiem. The film tells the story of a mother and daughter trying to survive in Raccoon City.

The story begins by presenting a seemingly perfect life, which is quickly shattered by a sudden outbreak. Chaos erupts with people screaming, zombies attacking, and the police fighting back amidst explosions. However, things quickly get even worse – we see a mother violently attacking a creature that appears to be a zombie, and then the family desperately trying to hide from a terrifying monster, seemingly with no escape.

After the bombs exploded, the daughter appeared to die peacefully, but her mother wasn’t so fortunate. She was suddenly shot in the head, and a stranger declared, “Raccoon City is ours.”

The aerial views of the crater in this scene are very similar to those in Resident Evil Requiem, suggesting we’re seeing present-day Raccoon City – the location of the original game. This raises some questions: who are these characters, and what is the facility they keep mentioning? Could the “Evil” they speak of be the Umbrella Corporation?

The game arrives on February 27th for Xbox Series X/S, PlayStation 5, PC, and Nintendo Switch 2, and until then, it’s hard to say exactly what to expect. However, with Grace Ashcroft battling to survive, Victor Gideon relentlessly chasing her, and Leon facing his usual challenges, there are still plenty of mysteries to unfold.
