Resident Evil Requiem’s Gameplay is Like Sushi, Says Director: “Trust us, Take it”

Capcom describes Resident Evil Requiem as a blend of different styles. Playing as Grace Ashcroft will feel like a classic survival horror experience, similar to Resident Evil 2, while Leon’s sections will be fast-paced and action-oriented, like Resident Evil 4. Director Koshi Nakanishi even compares the game to sushi – a carefully crafted mix of flavors. And according to the development team, they’re the creators of this unique approach to gameplay.

According to Nakanishi, if sushi didn’t exist, people who loved fish would simply eat it raw as sashimi, and those who loved rice would just eat rice. He jokes that the first sushi chef would have faced complaints: rice lovers would wonder why anyone would put fish on their rice, and sashimi fans would ask why rice was being added to perfectly good fish!

As Nakanishi points out, even if you prefer a single approach to survival horror, the unique feel of Requiem comes from blending two different styles together.

The recent gameplay showcase featured a lot of intense action with Leon, including many executions, headshots, and chainsaw kills. While some players might think that’s all Leon will be doing in the game, the developers want to assure everyone that’s not true. Leon’s gameplay will also include exploration, scary moments, and sections where you’ll need to revisit areas.

The game might suggest a bigger world beyond what we see, hinting at places Leon travels to, even though it’s not a fully open-world game. What’s really interesting, though, is how Leon’s style of play was intentionally made to be different from Grace’s, but still work well with it – just like the sushi comparison showed.

Nakanishi explained their approach: combining ingredients creates something truly special, far exceeding what each individual element offers. He playfully compared it to introducing sushi – they’re confident in their creation and encouraging people to try it. ‘Trust us,’ he said with a laugh, ‘take a chance on this new product.’

Launching February 27th on Xbox Series X/S, PlayStation 5, PC, and Nintendo Switch 2, Resident Evil Requiem follows Grace Ashcroft as she investigates a string of murders. The culprit seems to be an entity called Elpis, and Victor Gideon, a former Umbrella researcher, believes Grace holds the key to understanding it. Meanwhile, Leon also meets Gideon and has a hidden connection to Elpis.
