Capcom’s newest trailer for the upcoming survival horror game, Resident Evil Requiem, not only confirms Leon’s appearance, but has also gained attention for other details. Notably, Leon will finally be able to use a chainsaw – a weapon that previously caused him trouble in Resident Evil 4 and its remake.
It’s currently unclear if the characters have any other special abilities, but Automaton Japan has detailed how Grace and Leon play. Director Akifumi Nakanishi explained that Grace’s gameplay is similar to that of Resident Evil 2, while Leon’s focuses on martial arts and close combat, taking inspiration from Resident Evil 4.
This is Leon’s first starring role since Resident Evil 6, and the development team focused on how his experiences would shape him. They asked, ‘What would Leon be like in 2026, still fighting a never-ending bioterrorism threat?’ They wanted to explore his mental state and how his years of combat experience would influence his actions. The game builds on the foundation of Resident Evil 4, adding new elements based on these ideas.
Leon will have access to weapons like a tomahawk, which he can retrieve after defeating enemies. He’ll also have a unique car – a custom Porsche Cayenne Turbo GT, developed in collaboration with Porsche itself. When asked about vehicles often being destroyed in the series, producer Masato Kumazawa jokingly replied that it’s usually the helicopters that end up being blown up instead.
Nakanishi added, also laughing, “Please look forward to seeing what happens this time.”
It’s unclear if the vehicle’s appearance is a hint about its importance for exploring the game, especially since rumors suggest Leon’s areas will be much larger and more open than Grace’s. We’ll likely find out soon, as a more detailed reveal is scheduled for early next year.
The new game, Resident Evil Requiem, will be released on February 27, 2026, for Xbox Series X/S, PlayStation 5, PC, and Nintendo Switch 2. Capcom isn’t currently planning a demo, preferring to prioritize completing the game. That said, they might decide to release one later if player feedback from a demo could help improve performance, as they did with Pragmata.
