Resident Evil’s 7 Most Iconic Locations, Ranked

I’ll never forget walking into the Spencer Mansion in the original Resident Evil – it just felt iconic. And Capcom has kept that feeling going ever since, consistently creating these amazing locations for us fans to explore. Every one is so detailed and full of story, and it all just builds the tension perfectly. But honestly, some places really stick with you. There are a few locations that are burned into my memory, and it’s always great to revisit them – even if they are creepy and falling apart!

Here are the seven best Resident Evil locations, ranked.

7) Rockfort Island – Resident Evil: Code Veronica

While fans are hoping for a remake of Code Veronica, they can still enjoy the original Dreamcast version. Luckily, Rockfort Island provides the classic Resident Evil experience. When Claire Redfield arrives on this South Pacific island, she must explore both the Ashford mansion and a military training facility, accompanied by the rather frustrating Stevie Burnside. You won’t soon forget your time on the island, especially since you’ll have to play through it again as Chris Redfield.

6) Heisenberg’s Factory – Resident Evil Village

The Heisenberg Factory in Resident Evil Village often gets a bad reputation for being a long and somewhat dull area. Despite this, it’s visually striking with its impressive machinery and memorable enemy designs – monstrous, metallic creatures that highlight just how powerful Heisenberg is as a boss. While it can be a bit of a grind to play through, the factory is undeniably beautiful, and unlike Lady Dimitrescu’s Castle, it gives players ample opportunity to explore, making it a truly unforgettable location.

5) The Queen Zenobia – Resident Evil Revelations

I’ve noticed a lot of players miss out on the Revelations games, which is a shame because, honestly, they’re some of the best Resident Evil titles out there. What really grabbed me about the first one was the setting – it all happens on this awesome ghost ship, the Queen Zenobia. It’s not just a cool change of pace for RE; it’s a fantastic horror location. Cruise ships are huge, but they’re also confined, meaning narrow corridors. That makes for some seriously intense survival horror combat, and I think the Queen Zenobia deserves way more recognition as one of the best locations in RE history.

4) The Baker House – Resident Evil 7

Baker House serves as the central location in Resident Evil 7, much like Spencer Mansion was in earlier games. However, instead of being grand and luxurious, it’s a rundown, decaying house – and that’s intentional. Capcom designed it to feel like a place players need to investigate thoroughly. It’s full of hidden areas and useful items for Ethan Winters, and everything is cleverly connected. This design perfectly suits the game’s dark, gritty, and classic horror atmosphere.

3) Salazar’s Castle – Resident Evil 4

When it comes to over-the-top settings in Resident Evil 4, Salazar’s Castle takes the cake. While many fans love the Village, the Castle truly captures the spirit of Resident Evil. It’s grand, elaborate, and doesn’t shy away from being a bit ridiculous – which is exactly what makes the series so great.

2) The Spencer Mansion – Resident Evil

This is where my love for survival horror really began, and honestly, it was a close call for my number one spot. It’s amazing how well the original still plays! Capcom really nailed it with their first attempt, and Spencer Mansion is still a fantastic place to explore. Plus, the GameCube remake just made everything even better – it really turned Spencer’s estate into a beautiful, immersive world.

The first location in Resident Evil wasn’t just visually impressive—it truly defined what the series would become. It included everything fans now associate with the games: complex puzzles, frightening surprises, and even an underground lab. The Spencer Mansion established a high standard, and every game since has attempted to reach that same level of quality.

1) Raccoon City Police Department – Resident Evil 2

No location in the Resident Evil series has surpassed the original Spencer Mansion in terms of atmosphere and impact. Surprisingly, it wasn’t one of the newer games that achieved this. Capcom’s second installment, featuring the Raccoon Police Department – formerly a museum – stands alone as the only setting to rival the mansion, and remains one of the most memorable locations in gaming history.

The game features a sprawling, intricate environment, and discovering new routes provides a satisfying sense of relief, even if it’s just temporary. The puzzles are challenging but cleverly designed, often leading to a moment of amusement when solved. The narrow hallways heighten the tension, restricting your movement and making encounters with zombies even more frightening. It’s an ideal setting for a horror game, and the remake only improved upon it. Hopefully, the next installment, Resident Evil Requiem, can introduce a location that’s even better than the iconic RPD.
