While Street Racer didn’t ultimately challenge Mario Kart’s popularity, it was initially promoted in 1994 as a direct competitor.
This game stood out with its fun, cartoon-like style and fighting system similar to games like Street Fighter. It was a fairly well-known title when it came out.
Man, this game wasn’t just on the SNES! They really got it everywhere – I played it on the Genesis, PlayStation 1, Saturn, even the Game Boy! It also came out on the Amiga and PC, and honestly, probably a bunch of other systems too.

Launching on PlayStation 5 and PlayStation 4 on November 26th, The Street Racer Collection will include the classic versions of the game originally released for SNES, Genesis, Game Boy, and MS-DOS.
Here’s how dev QUByte describes it:
This unique game blends the fast-paced action of arcade racing with the intense combat of fighting games. It’s known for its originality, chaotic fun, and distinct personality. Players race on wild and obstacle-filled tracks – think Mount Rushmore or Transylvania – and can use special attacks to take out opponents. It offers more than just standard racing with a variety of exciting game modes.
The game features all the original content and gameplay modes. Players can enjoy local multiplayer with up to four people on the SNES, Genesis, and MS-DOS versions. This feature wasn’t available on the Game Boy release.

If you enjoyed classic 16-bit racing games on the Super Nintendo, this game is definitely worth checking out – it received good reviews when it first came out.
Some reviewers went so far as to say the SNES version was even better than the original Super Mario Kart, which was a huge compliment back then.
