Review: Scott Pilgrim EX Rules And A Pitch-Perfect Adaptation

Scott Pilgrim EX is the newest video game based on the popular comic series. The original Scott Pilgrim comics were heavily inspired by classic video games from the Super Nintendo and Sega Genesis, and previous game adaptations have been very well-received. Scott Pilgrim EX appears to build on that foundation, offering a visually updated and expanded take on the comic’s characters and world.

I was blown away by how good the final game turned out. Tribute Games has created a truly exceptional beat-em-up – one of the best in years – that’s packed with surprising depth and thrilling action. Playing Scott Pilgrim EX is a pure joy; it’s incredibly fun and easy to get lost in. As a fan of the original Scott Pilgrim comics, I think it’s a perfect tribute to both the source material and classic gaming, but even without that connection, it’s just a fantastic action game.

Review Score: 5/5

Pros: Cons:
Terrific action and sense of worldbuilding deliver a terrific beat-em-up/MetroidVania fusion. If you don’t like beat-em-ups or retro games, you can probably skip this one.
Sense of style is a pitch-perfect recreation and expansion of the source material. Small visual hiccups can be a little distracting.
Quick to learn, fun to master, hard to put down.

Scott Pilgrim EX Takes A Brawler Into A MetroidVania

Scott Pilgrim EX is a really fun game! It’s a side-scroller that takes the comic book’s action and art style and adds a MetroidVania twist, making the gameplay deeper and more expansive. The story kicks off when members of Scott’s band, Sex Bob-omb, are kidnapped by a strange figure called Metal Scott. Scott and Ramona have to team up with some unlikely allies – even a few of Ramona’s exes – to rescue them. After a quick tutorial, the game opens up to a vibrant world set in the year 20XX. Players will battle through waves of enemies like demons, robots, and even vegans, all in a race against time to save the band before their big show.

Following the satisfying conclusion of the original story and building on the character development seen in the Netflix series Scott Pilgrim Takes Off, Scott Pilgrim EX feels like a polished and improved version of the beloved 2010 game, Scott Pilgrim vs. the World: The Game. This time around, you have much more freedom to explore Toronto and choose which friends to help and which battles to fight, creating a really fun and open-ended experience.

Building on classic beat-em-up games, Scott Pilgrim EX adds a welcome layer of exploration and depth between fights. The combat itself is excellent – easy to pick up with quick combos, but with plenty of advanced techniques, special moves, and precise blocking to master. This thoughtful game design makes the whole experience incredibly exciting. The game encourages fast-paced, aggressive play, rewarding players for stringing together impressive combos and cleverly using their surroundings, ultimately turning simple action gameplay into something surprisingly complex and engaging.

Scott Pilgrim EX Looks, Sounds, And Feels Great

What makes Scott Pilgrim EX a great action game isn’t just how it’s designed, but the obvious passion for the original Scott Pilgrim comics and cartoons – and the classic video games that inspired them. The game is packed with references to the Scott Pilgrim universe, and perfectly captures the retro video game look that’s always been a part of its style. The charming, illustrated art style translated beautifully into pixel art, as we saw in the previous game adaptation. The result is a lively and visually engaging world, filled with subtle jokes and deep-cut references for fans to discover.

The game’s setting, a wilder take on the world of Scott Pilgrim, lets it fully embrace its quirky visuals, from the altered paths within Subspace to the robot armies reminiscent of Metal Sonic. It’s clear the developers have a deep affection for 90s platform games, and this shines through in the game’s design and style. Any gamer, even those unfamiliar with Scott Pilgrim, will enjoy the many nods to classic games. It’s a fantastic tribute to the comics and cartoons that influenced the story, as well as a clever reimagining of gameplay elements from older titles.

Scott Pilgrim EX Is The Action Game I’ve Been Waiting For

It was easy to predict that Scott Pilgrim EX would appeal to gamers who enjoy retro-style action games and are already fans of the Scott Pilgrim universe. Those familiar with the comic, movie, or show will be amazed by the clear love and attention to detail. However, the biggest surprise is just how enjoyable the gameplay is. It cleverly blends classic, fast-paced combat with unique boss battles, keeping things fresh and engaging. Unlockable upgrades add another layer of depth, rewarding players for exploring and collecting resources.

The game features a large, vibrant world divided into distinct areas, packed with hidden secrets that encourage teamwork. Players will often need to cooperate to overcome challenges and battle Metal Sonic. It’s consistently funny and exciting, and brilliantly captures the spirit of the original game while offering incredibly fun moment-to-moment gameplay. Scott Pilgrim EX is everything fans of the beloved classic wanted – it takes the original concept and elevates it to something truly special.
