RHOC’s Emily Simpson Shares Update on Son Luke’s Eating Disorder

Emily Simpson‘s family is getting her son Luke the help he needs.

A week following the disclosure by a star of The Real Housewives of Orange County that her 10-year-old son has ARFID (Avoidant/Restrictive Food Intake Disorder), this Bravolebrity discussed Luke’s current situation in his ongoing health struggle.

In an exclusive interview with TopMob News, Emily shared that Luke has significantly improved since the filming days. She mentioned that the production process was extremely stressful for him, and added that his absence from school during this time also caused additional stress.

Beyond Luke’s ARFED diagnosis, he is also undergoing therapy to address other behavioral problems contributing to his aversion towards certain foods.

The 49-year-old mentioned that he struggles with both ADHD and OCD. He shared his intense fear of being separated, which is quite severe in his case. We’ve made significant efforts to help him cope with this, and now he’s more at ease when I leave or return home.

In terms of his diet, Emily shared that Luke typically sticks to a limited variety of around three to four food items. However, through therapy and guidance from experts, she and her husband Shane Simpson have realized it’s not beneficial to force Luke into eating a wider range of foods.

Previously, I didn’t realize his condition or what was going on inside his brain, so I would become annoyed when he refused to eat different types of food. However, the reality star, who is also the mother of 12-year-old Annabelle and Luke’s twin Keller, acknowledged her mistakes. Now we understand that he has certain safe foods and always keep those in our household. We don’t scold him for eating those familiar foods, and occasionally try to introduce new ones to him as well.

At the debut of Bravo series on July 10, Emily revealed that Luke’s ARFID condition might suggest he’s on the autism spectrum. This aspect of his life will be explored throughout season 19.

Emily explained, “We referred him to a specialist for further examination, hoping to gather as much information as possible about the issue at hand. He’s undergoing extensive tests and we’re having numerous discussions about it.

In terms of the reaction since Emily disclosed Luke’s health struggles with followers, the ex-lawyer indicates that it’s been predominantly supportive.

Emily shared, “So many mothers have told me their children are experiencing the same thing, yet they were unaware of what it was. They didn’t realize there was a term for it. But now, with my help, they express gratitude because I’ve brought awareness to it, and finally, they have a place to start in helping their child.

For parents who suspect their child may have an eating disorder, Emily advises, “If something seems unusual or just doesn’t sit right with you, consult a good therapist and share your concerns. There’s a lot of helpful information available today. Mothers, trust your instincts – if it feels wrong in your heart, then you’re likely on the right track.
