Mary Cosby‘s worst fears have come true.
Jen Shah, star of The Real Housewives of Salt Lake City, has tragically lost her only son, Robert Cosby Jr. He passed away on February 23rd after a struggle with drug addiction, according to police reports. He was 23 years old.
On February 25th, the Salt Lake City Police Department reported that Robert Jr. was found deceased after officers investigated a potential overdose. The medical examiner is currently working to determine the official cause of death.
Robert Jr.’s struggles with addiction were shown on several seasons of a Bravo reality show. His mother, Mary—who shared him with her husband, Robert Cosby Sr.—actually predicted he would have a difficult future two years before he died.
In a candid conversation in 2024, a mother and son openly discussed his issues with substance abuse for the first time on camera. Seeing how serious her son’s situation was brought his mother to tears.
Look, I’m a big believer in meeting people where they are, and I always say I can offer guidance, but ultimately, real change comes from within. I can be there to help, absolutely, but I won’t enable behaviors I don’t believe are serving you. It’s about support, not enabling, and that’s a line I won’t cross.
Following Robert’s confession that he’d been using a combination of drugs – Xanax, MDMA (Molly), cocaine, and Adderall – his mother was shocked and cautioned him about the dangerous path his addiction was taking.
Mary went on, “It’s a gift to wake up each day. Think about all the people who didn’t make it through today. We all die eventually.”
Robert Jr.’s response was even more gut-wrenching.
He admitted he’d felt suicidal at the time. He described feeling worthless and like he didn’t belong in the world.

Speaking privately, Mary expressed regret for not recognizing how serious Robert Jr.’s addiction was. She said, “I’m really disappointed in myself; I feel like I failed him somehow.”
According to his lawyer, Clayton Simms, Robert Jr. had recently been released from jail in Salt Lake County after spending two months incarcerated. Despite her son being in jail, his mother actually saw his time there as a positive thing.
She revealed on the recent season six reunion of RHOSLC that he’s currently in a safe place, away from substance use. She explained that she needs to give him space to learn from his own choices, even if those lessons are difficult. Ultimately, she’s accepting of the situation and his need to figure things out on his own.
Mary and her husband, Robert Cosby Sr., shared a statement on February 25th about the loss of their son, Robert Jr. They said they are heartbroken but find comfort in their faith, believing he is now at peace with God. They expressed gratitude for the prayers and support they’ve received and are relying on their faith to get them through this difficult time.

Mary Cosby’s son, Robert Cosby Jr., passed away in February 2026 at the age of 23. The reality star from The Real Housewives of Salt Lake City had previously shared a touching photo of them together on Instagram in September 2023, during a difficult time as Robert Jr. battled addiction.

Just weeks before news of Robert Jr.’s passing shocked viewers of RHOSLC, his mother shared a heartfelt tribute to him on Instagram. Posted on February 7, 2026, it read, “#godfirst Love you all My Beautiful Son.. I love him sm.”

I’ve been watching ‘Married to Medicine’ for years, and honestly, seeing Robert Jr. open up during season six was really powerful. He admitted he was having a tough time with his sobriety after some legal issues, and it was incredibly moving. I actually saw him get emotional during the reunion show in 2026 – he was crying, and it just felt so raw and real. It was a brave thing for him to share, and it definitely stuck with me.

Mary posted a tribute to her “beautiful son” in April 2024.

In a 2024 incident, Mary challenged Robert Jr. about a rumor that he was already married. What did he say?
“I mean, kind, yeah…” the then 20-year-old shyly admitted. “Like, I went to the courthouse.”
