Rian Johnson Endorses Official Muppet Parody of Knives Out (And It’s Perfect)

Movie fans often suggest Knives Out as the perfect film to reimagine with the Muppets, and it’s easy to see why. The idea of Kermit, Fozzie, and the rest of the gang causing playful chaos alongside Daniel Craig’s detective, Benoit Blanc, while solving a murder mystery, is incredibly appealing. Many fans have been hoping for a Knives Out/Muppets combination for years, and now, with the upcoming release of Wake Up Dead Man on Netflix, their wishes are partially coming true. While Benoit Blanc isn’t investigating a crime at The Muppet Show, he is bringing his detective skills to Sesame Street.

I just saw the cutest thing on Netflix! They made a parody of Knives Out called Forks Out, and it’s hilarious. It features a puppet version of Benoit Blanc trying to figure out who stole Cookie Monster’s pie! Rian Johnson, the creator of the Knives Out films, even shared it on X and said he loved it. You absolutely have to check it out – it’s a fun little surprise!

Great news! I’m thrilled to share that #WakeUpDeadMan is now playing in theaters. You can find a location near you – check my pinned tweet for a link!

Netflix’s Forks Out Proves a Full Knives Out/Muppets Crossover Would Work

The video’s biggest strength is how surprisingly well the style of Knives Out combines with the Muppets. While Sesame Street is for younger viewers than The Muppet Show (which had jokes adults would appreciate too), it’s still a great fit for this idea. Benoit Blanc, who is a very dramatic and skilled detective in the original movies, feels right at home with characters like Cookie Monster, Elmo, and Oscar the Grouch as he solves the mystery in his unique way. The writers did a wonderful job of capturing what makes Blanc so special – his ability to carefully unravel the truth until he finds the answer.

This Sesame Street segment successfully captures the heart of what everyone loves about the show. It’s funny, but also teaches kids valuable life lessons. The creators didn’t compromise the show’s original spirit to make it work with the Knives Out theme. It’s a clever blend that should appeal to fans of both Sesame Street and the Knives Out movies – adults will enjoy it just as much as children.

This short, funny video will likely increase the demand for a full-length crossover between Knives Out and The Muppets, proving the concept could work well. Wake Up Dead Man completes the two-movie deal director Rian Johnson made with Netflix for Knives Out sequels, but it doesn’t have to be the end of the series. Because each movie features a different group of actors surrounding a central character played by Daniel Craig, it would be easy to continue making more films. If Johnson has a good idea, getting a fourth Knives Out movie made shouldn’t be difficult. Whether that film includes The Muppets is another matter entirely. While Johnson knows fans want the crossover, he’s hesitant because the two franchises have very different styles.

It’s unlikely we’ll see a full movie starring both Benoit Blanc and the Muppets unless Johnson changes his mind. While Netflix might create a short, humorous sketch based on Knives Out, a feature film is much more complex. Still, it would be a lot of fun – the Muppets have successfully been paired with dramatic acting before, like Michael Caine in The Muppet Christmas Carol. The Knives Out films are mysteries, but they also have comedic moments, so the combination could work. Hopefully, the recent Sesame Street appearance will give Johnson something to consider.
