Rian Johnson’s 97% RT Show Cancelled After 2 Seasons, but There Are Wild Recast Plans for Season 3

Rian Johnson, known for directing the film Star Wars: The Last Jedi, shifted gears to create mystery stories. He wrote and directed the Knives Out movies (with a third one coming soon) and also created the popular TV series Poker Face, starring Natasha Lyonne. While Poker Face has been a hit for the Peacock streaming service and received critical praise – even an Emmy nomination for Lyonne – Peacock has unfortunately canceled the show. However, Johnson has a new idea to ensure Poker Face continues.

Peacock has decided not to move forward with a third season of Poker Face, according to Deadline. While the streaming service hasn’t given a specific reason, the report suggests the show’s high production costs and a drop in viewership compared to its first season likely played a role. Creator Ryan Johnson is now looking for another network or streaming service to pick up the show, ideally for two more seasons. In a surprising change, Natasha Lyonne, who starred as Charlie Cale, will not be returning. Johnson is now hoping to cast Peter Dinklage in the role, as part of a plan to feature a different lead character every few seasons.

Poker Face Recasting Plan Is Surprising, but It Could Work

It’s not surprising that creator Ryan Johnson is trying to find a new home for Poker Face after its cancellation – shows are often rescued by other networks. However, the decision to recast the lead role of Charlie Cale is unexpected. Natasha Lyonne has become so closely associated with the character and the show’s success that it’s hard for fans to imagine the series without her. Fortunately, Johnson and Lyonne have stated they’ve been planning this change since the end of season two. Given Johnson’s past successes, it’s reasonable to trust he knows what he’s doing.

Though it’s not a perfect match, the creators of Poker Face are taking inspiration from the James Bond series, which has successfully featured many different actors in the lead role. This approach has kept Bond relevant for decades, allowing for diverse creative interpretations. Each Bond actor brings a unique style to the character, and the producers envision a similar approach with Charlie Cale. Different actors could portray Cale in new and interesting ways, offering fresh perspectives while maintaining the show’s central concept. Peter Dinklage’s version of Cale would likely be very different from Natasha Lyonne’s, letting the creative team explore new facets of the character without changing what makes Poker Face special.

The way Poker Face is structured makes it relatively simple to bring in a new lead actor. Because each episode usually features a self-contained mystery, there aren‘t complex, ongoing storylines to worry about. This means Peter Dinklage could easily take over the role of Charlie Cale without disrupting any existing plots. The next season could simply be presented as Charlie solving a fresh set of cases. The show’s limited two-season commitment might also attract a wider range of talented actors, as it doesn’t require a long-term commitment.

While the future of Poker Face Season 3 isn’t certain yet, several options seem likely. Now that Taylor Sheridan is leaving Paramount, Paramount+ might be interested in making Poker Face its main attraction. Creator Rian Johnson has also worked with Netflix before, so they could be another possibility. The show is critically acclaimed, and Peter Dinklage is a well-known actor who’s perfect for this type of series, so it’s likely someone will pick it up. Hopefully, Johnson will get the chance to continue his vision for the show.
