PBS and ITV have ordered a new, gripping police drama featuring Richard Armitage and Annabel Scholey.
The new crime drama, Winter, follows Ethan Winter, a unique forensic pathologist played by Armitage, and DI Lauren Bell, a straightforward detective portrayed by Scholey. They team up to solve a case in Bristol, inspired by the French series Balthazar.
The show promises a powerful partnership, with Winter’s unique understanding of victims proving to be a huge asset to Bell and her team of detectives.
But Winter is hiding something. He’s still deeply troubled by an unsolved murder of someone he cared about, and he’s determined to find the killer himself, even if it means working outside the law.
Winter is a new partnership between PBS and ITV, continuing their successful collaborations on shows like Downton Abbey, Professor T, and Grantchester.
ITV Studios-owned Eagle Eye is producing and ITV Studios is distributing.
In a statement, Armitage praised the team creating ‘Winter,’ calling them the best in the business. He also highlighted the ambitious writing by David Allison, predicting it will bring a fresh and exciting take to the genre.
Ethan Winter is a fascinating character – he’s both dedicated to his work and a bit of a risk-taker. He’s haunted by a difficult past and seems to be constantly on the verge of making things worse for himself. I’m very happy to be back with ITV.
Scholey expressed her excitement about joining ITV and Eagle Eye Drama for the upcoming series, and working with Richard Armitage on what she described as excellent scripts. She’s particularly looking forward to portraying the complex and dramatic relationship between their characters, and embracing the witty and sharp personality of DI Lauren Bell.
Dries Vos and Kaat Beels, both known for their work on ‘Professor T’ and other series, will direct ‘Winter’. Matt Baker, also from ‘Professor T’, will be the producer. Jo McGrath and Walter Iuzzolino from Eagle Eye Drama will oversee the series as executive producers.
David Allison (The Couple Next Door) and Mark Greig (Ashes to Ashes) are penning the adaptation.
Filming is due to kick off in Bristol and Belgium during early 2026.
