In a surprising sci-fi twist, “Rick and Morty” wrapped up Season 8 on Adult Swim, bringing Rick face to face with his lost spouse, Diane, once again. This season has been particularly noteworthy as it seems to have brought the long-running animated series back to its original form. After the significant changes in the recent seasons, “Rick and Morty” Season 8 opted for a more focused approach, with each episode taking the characters on enjoyable standalone adventures.
I’ve noticed that even though Rick and Morty’s Season 8 is setting a fresh foundation, it has significantly expanded upon past events. Each character has been evolving and transforming due to their experiences, which reaches a climax in the season finale with Memory Rick reappearing as an unexpected last adversary for good old Rick to conquer. However, Diane’s role in these events adds another layer of complexity to the storyline.
Rick and Diane Reunite in Rick and Morty Season 8 Finale
In the Season 8 finale of “Rick and Morty,” titled “Hot Rick,” it’s revealed that after being trapped in Jerry’s mind following their brain merge in Season 7, an alter ego of Rick known as Memory Rick had been enhancing Jerry’s image as a great father and grandfather within the Smith family. In the end, Memory Rick is removed from Jerry’s mind, prompting Original Rick to erase all memories of his wife from his own mind to explore potential new relationships. However, upon discovering that there exists another version of Rick’s wife, Diane, Memory Rick takes action once more.
Stepping into Beth’s mental landscape, Memory Rick subtly reshapes her memories, effectively brainwashing her for the sake of saving Memory Diane. In our next encounter, Rick and Diane are essentially their memory counterparts. This encounter, filled with a poignant sadness, is a reflection of the two characters, as the original Rick (Rick Prime) has erased any trace of his wife from the multiverse, ensuring that he can never meet her authentic self again. Thus, the real Rick must observe this reunion from afar.

What Happens to Memory Rick and Diane?
In this manner, Memory Rick and Memory Diane managed to meet again, yet the act almost shattered Beth’s mental state. As they had manipulated Beth’s memories extensively, they came to realize that these memories were merely creations of Beth’s mind. Consequently, they determined that erasing Memory Rick was necessary to resolve the situation. It took both Rick and Space Beth to finally soothe Beth, and this act brought about a profoundly emotional moment as Rick sincerely apologized to Beth for his long absence from her life.
After being erased from Beth’s memories, Rick opts to preserve Memory Rick and Diane in a unique storage unit on the outskirts of space. Since Rick mentioned erasing their memory from his own mind, it seems unlikely they’ll reappear in Rick and Morty in the future, thereby wrapping up that particular storyline permanently. In some fashion, a version of Rick and his lost wife have found a satisfying conclusion to their tale.
