Ridley Scott Sci-Fi Thriller ‘Dog Stars’ Gets a New Release Date

20th Century Studios and Disney have postponed the release of Ridley Scott‘s upcoming film, The Dog Stars. Director Scott had previously announced the project in November 2024 as his next film after Gladiator II, based on Peter Heller’s 2012 science fiction novel The Dog Stars. The story is set in a post-pandemic future where a man, his dog, and a mysterious stranger pick up a signal suggesting an incoming invasion.

According to Deadline, the release of The Dog Stars has been pushed back to August 28, 2026. The film, directed by Scott, features Jacob Elordi, Margaret Qualley, Josh Brolin, Benedict Wong, and Guy Pearce. Its original release date of March 27, 2026, will now be taken by Ready or Not 2: Here I Come.

A new science fiction thriller was initially planned to launch the weekend after Project Hail Mary, a film based on a popular sci-fi novel starring Ryan Gosling and directed by Phil Lord and Chris Miller. However, it will now conclude the summer movie season, opening alongside the reboot of Cliffjumper directed by Jaume Collet-Serra. Joining them on August 28, 2026, is Coyote vs. Acme, which, despite being considered a loss for Warner Bros. Discovery, will now be released in theaters by Ketchup Entertainment.

‘The Dog Stars’ Moves Out of a Crowded Spring

As a huge film fan, I’ve always been in awe of Ridley Scott – he’s a true master. His sci-fi movies like Alien, Blade Runner, and The Martian are just iconic. But I have to admit, some of his later work, like Prometheus and Alien: Covenant, didn’t quite hit the mark for me, and a lot of fans felt the same. Now, 20th Century Studios has pushed back the release of his new film, The Dog Stars, to late summer instead of spring. I think that suggests they really believe in it and see it as a potential blockbuster. Plus, moving it away from a crowded April – with big releases like The Super Mario Bros. Movie, The Drama, The Mummy, and the Michael biopic – feels like a smart move to give it more breathing room at the box office.

Ridley Scott’s films in the 2020s have had an uneven performance. While The Last Duel was critically acclaimed, it didn’t do well financially. House of Gucci received mixed reviews but was a moderate success as theaters reopened after the pandemic. Gladiator II didn’t reach the same cultural impact as the original, but it was a box office success – though Russell Crowe isn’t a fan. Perhaps The Dog Stars will finally give Scott both critical praise and commercial success, something he hasn’t achieved since The Martian ten years ago.
