Fans of Jilly Cooper’s books initially said you didn’t fit their image of Rupert from the novels. Are you happy that you’ve managed to change their minds?
It’s definitely nerve-wracking stepping into a role that fans are passionate about. The producers seemed to believe I had something of the character Rupert in me, and getting Jilly’s approval gave me a real boost of confidence.
Is he fun or awkward to play?
At first, I felt a little awkward reading scenes where Rupert walked into a room and everyone instantly fell for him. But now, getting to spend the day with people acting like I’m the most attractive man around is actually really enjoyable.
Do you follow a diet to get in shape before filming?
As a big movie fan, I always notice how actors transform for roles. With Rupert, the goal was to make him appear really strong and heroic, so we worked with a trainer to build him up physically. Honestly, I’m not a fan of extreme diets – I think putting that pressure on young men is just asking for trouble, and it’s not a healthy message to send.

How do you feel when you watch your sex scenes?
It’s still strange to watch a simulated sex scene, particularly in front of a large audience! However, it’s important to remember that sex should be enjoyable, and much of the intimacy depicted in ‘Rivals‘ is actually quite playful and fun.
There’s a really fun moment in the second series where Rupert dances to “The Chicken Song” from Spitting Image. What was it like filming that scene?
That’s definitely one of my favorite scenes! It’s funny because the song, ‘The Chicken Song,’ was actually first sung by Emily Atack’s mother, and she’s in the scene too. She playfully touches me while we’re dancing!
What were the 80s like for you?
I grew up in a small village in Essex, where my father was a vicar. My childhood involved a lot of time spent riding my BMX bike with friends and attending church festivals.

Bella Maclean plays Taggie
Taggie has a dressed-down look – were you jealous of the actresses who wear puffball dresses?
Bella Maclean says Taggie’s makeup is easy, and she doesn’t need a wig. She loves Taggie’s cowboy boots and jeans, feeling they help her get into character just as much as padded shoulders would. She also notes that some of Valerie’s outfits are amazing – Lisa McGrillis even does a little can-can dance every time she comes out of her trailer wearing them!
You weren’t born until 1997. Do any of the 80s references confuse you?
Honestly, a lot of the products they feature, I actually grew up with – like, I remember potato waffles from when I was a kid! It brings back such fun memories. And it’s good to know the cigarettes are fake, because I’d feel differently if I was actually sitting in a smoky pub. But as it is, it all just feels wonderfully over-the-top and glamorous, which I love!
Do you wish you’d been around back then?
I disagree. My parents often share wonderful stories about that era, and I like the thought of a less complicated life. I enjoy the scene with Taggie and her cassette tape, but I also appreciate being able to video chat with my best friend in America.
The show has a reputation for including intimate scenes. Since the first season didn’t feature any, will that be different in the upcoming season?
It’s hard to put a label on it! While some of the show’s intimate scenes are lighthearted and playful, others are more complex and emotionally resonant. There are genuinely touching moments throughout.

Rivals season 2 is coming to Disney+ on Friday 15 May 2026.
