The classic film “This Is Spinal Tap” is set for a sequel, all thanks to Harry Shearer’s hard work. Although the original has garnered numerous accolades since its debut, many rock musicians back then were hesitant about it. Notably, Ozzy Osbourne, who passed away, didn’t find it amusing, claiming that it was too authentic and reflective of his own musician journey.
I recently conversed with Rob Reiner about the initial film, and after bringing up Ozzy’s reaction, I pondered if other musicians had engaged him regarding the legendary mockumentary throughout the years. As it turns out, the director, who will once again play the “director” character in the forthcoming sequel, has indeed heard from several renowned rock stars over the years about the film, including Sting and Axl Rose.
Some individuals would immediately understand the humor and enjoy themselves, while others, including not only Ozzy and Steven Tyler, but also a variety of people, responded with, “Hold on a second.” I believe Axl Rose also found it problematic. Upon meeting Sting and learning that he had repeatedly watched it, he said, “Each time I see it, I’m unsure whether to laugh or shed tears.” In this way, we did touch upon the raw reality of the world, and we aimed to portray it accurately.
Listening to various prominent figures, some of whom seem to have lived similar scenarios depicted in the Spinal Tap movie, respond quite differently is intriguing. It seems as though the film encapsulates a significant era in music history and could rightfully claim a place among the greatest music films ever made.
A significant part of the appeal of This Is Spinal Tap is what makes fans eager for Spinal Tap II: The End Continues. Beyond the jokes, there’s a rich nod to the reality of these musicians’ world. Rob Reiner explained this when he discussed why the film resonates: the authentic portrayal of the life and struggles of a rock band on tour.
Moreover, our affection for rock ‘n roll runs deep since we were raised in its era. Consequently, we strive to pay tribute to it in a way that acknowledges its significance while also highlighting its quirks and flamboyance.
In “Spinal Tap II: The End Continues,” the band reunites after many years apart for what is supposed to be their last performance. Rob Reiner has shared that he sought guidance from some well-known acquaintances, including Paul McCartney (who is featured in the sequel), regarding this unique situation.

5 Reasons Why This Is Spinal Tap Is Still The Funniest Movie I’ve Ever Seen In My Entire Life
Rob Reiner revealed to TopMob that he had been uncertain for a while if another installment of This Is Spinal Tap was necessary, but the idea took shape swiftly as they pondered the themes of aging and estranged performers. He also verified that the sequel will incorporate several beloved songs from the past, reworked and sung by Michael McKean, Harry Shearer, Christopher Guest, and their upcoming drummer.
After Ozzy Osbourne passes away, it seems plausible that his life story will resonate with the mayhem and silliness depicted in This Is Spinal Tap. One famous scene of him angrily complaining about Sharon’s bubble machine malfunctioning during a performance mirrors the Stonehenge incident from the film. Sadly, he won’t be around to witness the sequel, as I am curious about his reaction and any references to other musicians in it.
The Spinal Tap Saga: The Sequel Unfolds” releases on September 12th. In the interim, we’ll be discussing a plethora of other forthcoming films and series, so do remember to drop by regularly for updates!
