In the realm of horror cinema, a highly anticipated movie is securing its young lead. According to Deadline’s report, Arabella Olivia Clark has been confirmed as the star in “Other Mommy”. She will be joined on screen by Jessica Chastain, Jay Duplass, and Dichen Lachman. This production, distributed by Universal Pictures, is under the direction of Rob Savage, known for his successful films like “Host” and the upcoming “The Boogeyman” in 2023. The film is a significant project from James Wan’s Atomic Monster, now combined with Blumhouse, and is based on Josh Malerman’s novel “Incidents Around the House”, the author behind “Bird Box”.
Rob Savage burst onto the entertainment landscape with the 2020 release of “Host“, a unique found-footage film produced using Zoom, which garnered widespread attention during the pandemic. Critics appreciated its innovative approach and relentless suspense, while the low-budget production showcased Savage’s ability to generate chilling, confined terror. He moved on to studio filmmaking with “The Boogeyman“, an adaptation of a Stephen King story that garnered mixed reviews but managed to be a moderate box office hit, earning over $82 million globally on a budget of $35 million. Originally slated for exclusive streaming on Hulu, positive test screenings led Disney to release it in theaters as well. With his upcoming project “Other Mommy“, Savage will have an opportunity to rekindle the magic of “Host” and solidify himself as a significant figure in horror.
The union of James Wan’s Atomic Monster and Jason Blum’s Blumhouse, set to officially merge in 2024, is also referred to as another influential title within the horror genre. Although they will continue to function independently, this alliance grants Atomic Monster priority access to Blumhouse’s agreement with Universal Pictures. This collaboration unites the innovative minds behind some of the most successful horror series ever made, such as The Conjuring, Insidious, The Purge, and Halloween, and has already resulted in the viral hit M3GAN.
Chastain’s participation adds a lot of star appeal to the project, as she re-enters the genre following impressive performances in Andy Muschietti’s hit horror film It Chapter Two and Guillermo del Toro’s gothic story Crimson Peak. Lachman, beloved by fans for her work on Severance, along with Duplass, a versatile actor, completes an impressive adult cast.
What to Expect From Other Mommy?
In “Incidents Around the House” by Malerman, the story unfolds from the viewpoint of eight-year-old Bela, to be portrayed by Olivia Clark in the film. Her life takes a frightening turn when an unseen entity she calls “Other Mommy” begins to torment her family’s home. At first, the entity’s actions seem harmless, but they soon escalate into something ominous, with a recurring, chilling demand from it to Bela: “May I enter your heart?” The story masterfully creates an oppressive environment of fear as it delves into the terror of a child discovering that their most secure sanctuary has been corrupted by a danger they cannot explain, even to their parents. Known for his exploration of intricate themes and varied subgenres, Malerman’s work offers rich material for an adaptation that is sure to leave viewers genuinely unsettled.
Mainstream viewers primarily recognize Malerman as the writer behind the novel “Bird Box“, which Netflix transformed into a movie featuring Sandra Bullock. After its release, Netflix announced that approximately 80 million households tuned in to watch the film within weeks, positioning it among their top-viewed original movies. Consequently, “Bird Box” gained significant cultural traction, leading to an explosion of memes and the viral craze known as the “Bird Box Challenge.
Other Mommy is scheduled to open in theaters on May 8, 2026.
