Robbie Daymond Talks Bringing His Critical Role Character To Assassin’s Creed Shadows

Robbie Daymond is a well-known figure among fans of the series Critical Role. He’s also appeared in numerous other prominent roles, such as voicing Tuxedo Max in Viz Media’s reboot of Sailor Moon and Spider-Man himself in Marvel’s Spider-man. Most recently, Daymond lent his voice to a mission for the game Assassin’s Creed Shadows, where he played Rufino, a new ally for players. Recently, The Character Sheet from ComicBook had an opportunity to interview Daymond about his role in Assassin’s Creed Shadows.

In this latest development, the fresh Story Pack titled “A Pivotal Encounter” has been launched for Assassin’s Creed Shadows, offering an exciting new quest free of charge. This update introduced Robbie Daymond’s character Rufino as a fresh ally within the game. Notably, Rufino mirrors the character Daymond portrayed in Critical Role‘s standalone adventure for Assassin’s Creed Shadows. Naturally, given this connection, ComicBook was eager to learn more about Daymond’s experience of embodying his character in this new form.

Initially, it wasn’t planned for Rufino to be part of the “Assassin’s Creed Shadows” DLC within Critical Role’s one-shot adventure, as this content wasn’t already prepared during the game’s creation. Consequently, Daymond didn’t anticipate that his character would appear in the actual video game. Instead, he developed Rufino just like any other Dungeons & Dragons character. In our conversation, we wanted to learn more about how Daymond creates characters such as Rufino, so he graciously shared some insights with us.

Daymond, being a traditional theater enthusiast, greatly appreciates a well-crafted background that inspires impactful decisions and intriguing character development, as he put it.

In the time when “Critical Role” performed their one-shot, “Assassin’s Creed Shadows” hadn’t been released yet. Consequently, creating the character Rufino was quite an engaging exploration, given that the creator aimed to ensure historical accuracy in his portrayal.

Fans of Critical Role and Assassin’s Creed might be interested to know if there are any direct links between the one-shot and the new Story Pack in Assassin’s Creed Shadow.

In simpler terms, Matt [Mercer] has created a world and era in his previous one-shot which forms the basis for an upcoming storyline. This new tale will emerge when Rufino becomes a regular character in the game. Furthermore, he mentioned that this new narrative is just as captivating as what they aimed to achieve during the one-shot.

When discussing what sets the Story Pack apart, it can be said that “the true advantages lie in the fact that avid game enthusiasts can appreciate these characters without needing the backstory of the one-shot, while fans of CR and the one-shot may find themselves drawn into this captivating game world.” Additionally, when merging popular intellectual properties, he emphasizes that it should feel natural, and the narrative must validate their union. Remarkably, both Ubisoft and Critical Role teams have successfully achieved this harmonious blend.

Even though Daymond initially developed the character Rufino, he didn’t know about the events unfolding between the short film and the game until he received the script. Consequently, he spent some time exploring Rufino’s motivations and understanding how his character had evolved over this period. This transformation will be noticeable to those who watched the short film, as they’ll see Rufino in an entirely new context. In the game, we’ll find him in a different situation, and his life has undergone significant changes.

Speaking about his experience in “Assassin’s Creed Shadows”, Daymond expresses, “I’m a secret geek, so whenever I get to sneak into any popular intellectual property, I can’t help but corner myself and whisper, ‘I’ve infiltrated your Assassin’s Creed world now!’

Despite not having played the latest installment of Assassin’s Creed, Daymond is a dedicated fan of the series. Undeniably, the opportunity to bring his character to life in the collaboration between Critical Role and Assassin’s Creed Shadows was an exhilarating endeavor for the voice actor.

The freshly released “A Critical Encounter” story expansion is now live in “Assassin’s Creed Shadows”. This addition introduces the character Rufino, played by Daymond, as well as a new mission, a new achievement, and a reward banner showcasing the emblem of “Critical Role”.
