Despite flopping in theaters, the 2025 crime drama The Alto Knights has become a hit on streaming services. The film stars Robert De Niro in two roles, but it didn’t receive the same praise or success as his classic gangster films like Goodfellas (1990) and The Godfather Part II (1974). It was a major disappointment for both critics and audiences.
As of today, January 8th, The Alto Knights is the ninth most popular movie on HBO Max worldwide, according to data from FlixPatrol. It’s performing better than River Wild at number 10, but trails behind films like The Edge of Seventeen, Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning, Jane Austen Wrecked My Life, Split, the How to Train Your Dragon movies, and One Battle After Another, which currently holds the top spot.
I’m so excited to see that The Alto Knights is really taking off! It’s currently in the Top 10 on HBO Max in 18 different countries this week. Most of them are in Europe – like Denmark, Finland, Iceland, the Netherlands, Poland, Portugal, and Spain – but it’s even made it all the way to Pakistan in South Asia, which is amazing!
Directed by Academy Award winner Barry Levinson (known for Rain Man) and written by Academy Award nominee Nicholas Pileggi (Goodfellas), The Alto Knights features Robert De Niro playing two famous and ruthless mob leaders from the 1950s – Vito Genovese and Frank Costello – as they fight for power over New York City.
Alongside Robert De Niro, the film The Alto Knights features a talented cast including Emmy Award-winning actress Debra Messing (known for Will & Grace), Cosmo Jarvis (Shōgun), and Kathrine Narducci, Michael Rispoli, Ed Amatrudo, James Ciccone (The Deuce), Wallace Langham, Belmont Cameli, Louis Mustillo, and Matt Servitto, all of whom also appeared in The Sopranos.
Critics had a mixed reaction to The Alto Knights, describing it as a decent but predictable gangster movie that pits Robert De Niro against a younger version of himself. However, it didn’t quite succeed, earning a disappointing 40% rating on Rotten Tomatoes.
While critics haven’t been overly impressed, audiences really seem to like The Alto Knights. It currently has a 71% audience score on Rotten Tomatoes, with viewers finding it a fun and dramatic tribute to older gangster films – focusing more on character interactions than intense action.
Despite being a major financial failure in theaters – earning only $9 million worldwide on a $45–50 million budget, resulting in an estimated $30–35 million loss for Warner Bros. – The Alto Knights is now gaining popularity on HBO Max, likely due to the film’s stars, Robert De Niro (who plays a dual role).
