Enthusiasts will be thrilled to learn that Robert Downey Jr. maintained a longstanding Marvel Cinatic Universe (MCU) custom in his latest turn for the superhero brand. Since 2008, Downey has essentially been the symbolic leader of Marvel Studios’ interconnected movie and television series. Although his Tony Stark/Iron Man persona is depicted as deceased within the storyline, he has remained a significant ambassador for the franchise, and this is evident once again as he re-joins the superhero ranks, assuming the villainous part of an extraterrestrial Doctor Doom in the upcoming Avengers: Doomsday.
The impact of Downey’s portrayal of Iron Man is evident throughout the Marvel Cinematic Universe. From young actors like Tom Holland emulating his Spider-Man style, to projects such as Ironheart, which delve into the universe post-Iron Man’s departure, Downey’s version of Stark has left an indelible mark. Essentially, he has established a set of defining moments both on and off screen in the Marvel Universe.
In the latest Ironheart video, Robert Downey Jr. resurrected an iconic Marvel Cinematic Universe reference that spans more than a decade.
The latest Marvel Studios video features Robert Downey Jr., Iron Man himself, chatting with Dominique Thorne, who plays Ironheart, about their upcoming armored streaming series. In this video, Downey is spotted donning a classic West Coast Avengers t-shirt, a signature piece of clothing often worn by the MCU actor.
Over the years, Downey has frequently been spotted wearing the same distinctive shirt, dating back to when he was promoting the first Avengers film in 2012. He’s been seen sporting this powerful graphic tee on various occasions, such as during the press tours for Iron Man 3 and Avengers: Endgame (in 2013 and 2019 respectively).
The entire series of Ironheart is currently streaming on Disney+. This new series in production by executive producer Ryan Coogler, famous for Black Panther and Sinners, features Dominique Thorne as Riri Williams, a Chicago-based teenage prodigy in technology, aspiring to emulate the feats of Robert Downey Jr.’s Tony Stark/Iron Man. Robert Downey Jr. will soon reappear in Avengers: Doomsday as Victor Von Doom, joined by an impressive ensemble cast from the Marvel Cinematic Universe and beyond, including Anthony Mackie, Chris Hemsworth, and Patrick Stewart.

Iron Man
Initially, Iron Man, who was actually James Rhodes (War Machine) during that time, was among the inaugural members of the West Coast Avengers. Hawkeye was the one who invited him to join this California-based superhero squad. Interestingly, in the original West Coast Avengers storyline, the Iron Man character wasn’t Tony Stark but an unrecognized version of James Rhodes by the rest of the team.
Hawkeye
Clint Barton, popularly known as Hawkeye from the Marvel Cinematic Universe (portrayed by Jeremy Renner), was the founding member of the original West Coast Avengers squad. Using his iconic bow, he assembled the team following a suggestion from his fellow Avenger, Vision, who proposed that an offshoot team based on the west coast could streamline their heroic activities further.
Tigra
Tigra was initially part of the original team of West Coast Avengers. Originally known as Greer Grant Nelson, she was once a university student in Chicago. Following the tragic demise of her police officer husband, she chose to participate in an innovative scientific experiment that ultimately transformed her into the feline superhero, Tigra.
Mockingbird
The Mockingbird character, depicted on Downey’s well-known graphic t-shirt, represents the fourth and concluding member of the West Coast Avengers. Originally part of the California team, Mockingbird was previously a SHEILD agent who underwent an experiment involving a super soldier serum similar to Captain America’s during an attempt to replicate the legendary comic book hero.
