Robert Downey Jr.’s Best Non-Marvel Franchise Just Made Its Way to Netflix

The profession of Robert Downey Jr. is deeply intertwined with his portrayal of Tony Stark/Iron Man within the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU), a role that not only kickstarted but also revolutionized the industry back in 2008. For over a decade, he elevated Iron Man to become the most cherished comic book character, with fans showing immense affection for his depiction of the superhero. In the upcoming _Avengers_ films, Downey will reprise his role as the villainous Doctor Doom. Although he is inseparable from the MCU, it’s also essential to acknowledge that Downey launched two successful film franchises during the late 2000s.

A year following his performance in Iron Man, Downey stepped into the role of the legendary detective Sherlock Holmes. Under the direction of Guy Ritchie, he starred in not one but two Sherlock Holmes films – first with the 2009 hit and then with 2011’s Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows, amassing over $1 billion at the box office. Fans of Downey’s Sherlock Holmes series now have an easier time watching it, as its two existing installments have recently been added to Netflix.

On September 1st, two movies featuring Sherlock Holmes were added to Netflix’s collection, offering subscribers an engaging selection of action-mysteries. Given the alluring cast (Jude Law and Rachel McAdams share the limelight), coupled with the renowned intellectual property, it’s plausible that these Sherlock Holmes films will appear on Netflix’s Top 10 Movies list for some time.

Will There Be a Sherlock Holmes 3?

The duo, Downey and Law, are linked to a new Sherlock Holmes film, with Dexter Fletcher stepping in as director instead of Guy Ritchie. However, there’s been scant news about this third installment for quite some time now, and given that Downey has resumed work within the Marvel Cinematic Universe, prospects seem slim.

In simpler terms, it was reported in July by Jared Harris, known for portraying Moriarty in ‘Sherlock Holmes’, that there had been no progress on a possible third film. This news left fans feeling uncertain about the movie’s future.

For approximately 15 years, the Sherlock Holmes series has remained paused. However, Netflix is busy crafting a detective film series with a fresh spin – introducing Sherlock’s younger sister as the main character. Millie Bobby Brown stars in two Netflix films titled Enola Holmes, with Henry Cavill playing her on-screen older brother, Sherlock. They are set to reprise their roles for a third installment of this series, which was filmed earlier in 2023 and is expected to stream exclusively on Netflix at an unspecified date in the future, likely around 2026.

What’s New on Netflix?

At the beginning of September, Netflix began streaming a couple of “Sherlock Holmes” films, along with several other well-known titles like “The Amazing Spider-Man,” “Chicken Run,” “Billy Madison,” “Inside Man,” and “Shrek.” On Monday morning, these movies, among many others, were added to their collection.
