
Robert Redford, the actor, Oscar winner and Hollywood legend, has died at the age of 89.
Robert Redford died peacefully at his home in Sundance, Utah, on September 16th, according to his publicist, Cindi Berger. He was surrounded by loved ones and cherished the area where he lived. His family has asked for privacy during this difficult time, and he will be deeply missed.
Robert Redford was born in Santa Monica, California in 1936. He started acting in the late 1950s, performing in both theater and television in New York City.
He became famous in the 1960s starring in popular movies like Barefoot in the Park and Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid. In 1973, he earned an Oscar nomination for Best Actor for his performance in The Sting, where he acted alongside Paul Newman.
He then became a leading actor in popular films like All the President’s Men, A Bridge Too Far, and Out of Africa. More recently, he appeared in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, playing Alexander Pierce in Captain America: Winter Soldier and Avengers: Endgame.

Robert Redford said he would stop acting in 2018, and his final movie was *The Old Man & the Gun*. Although he stepped back from acting, he continued to work on films in smaller roles as a narrator and producer.
Throughout his career, Robert Redford also directed several films, most notably 1980’s *Ordinary People*, which earned him an Academy Award for Best Director. He went on to direct *The Conspirator* in 2010 and *The Company You Keep* in 2012.
He’s also famous for creating the Sundance Institute and the Sundance Film Festival, which were established to help independent filmmakers.
Acknowledging his achievements and overall impact on cinema, Robert Redford was presented with an honorary Academy Award in 2002, celebrated as a source of inspiration for independent and creative filmmakers around the world.
Robert Redford married Lola Van Wagenen, a historian and activist, in 1958. They divorced in 1995. He later married Sibylle Szaggars in 2009, and she survives him.
He and Van Wagenen had four children: Scott, James, Shauna, and Amy. Sadly, Scott passed away as an infant due to SIDS, and James died from cancer in 2020. Today, Shauna works as an artist and Amy is a director.
