Robert Webb makes surprise Bake Off appearance after missing out on competing alongside Peep Show cast-mates

Fans of the comedy show Peep Show were delighted to hear that some of its cast members will be appearing in a special holiday episode of The Great British Bake Off.

David Mitchell, Olivia Colman, Isy Suttie, Matt King, and Sophie Winkleman got together tonight, December 25th, for the first time since the show Peep Show ended in 2015. They spent the evening baking – whisking, kneading, and decorating – in a friendly competition.

Viewers were excited to see five of the original cast members back on television, but many were sad to learn that Robert Webb wouldn’t be participating – and here’s the reason why…

Even though Webb wasn’t able to participate in the show, he made a video for the cast to express his regrets for missing it.

I wasn’t able to make it because I was working,” the 53-year-old said. “I host a children’s program called High Hoops – it’s a show about a girls’ basketball team for CBBC – and I was filming in Yorkshire at the time.

I was already difficult about when I could work, so asking for three more days off would have been unreasonable.

The actor expressed his disappointment at not being able to attend, explaining that he’d sent a short video message apologizing for his absence. He joked that this meant he’d still be on TV at Christmas, but without the stress of having to do any baking!

Despite admitting he’s never baked before, Webb explained that his busy work schedule was the real reason he couldn’t film the special.

He playfully remarked that while some people need to work, others, like Olivia Colman, don’t! More baking fun is coming soon with The Great New Year’s Bake Off airing on Channel 4 on New Year’s Day at 6:40pm, bringing back popular bakers Nelly, Briony, Selasi, Tasha, Rahul, Val, and Giuseppe for some holiday cheer. You can also catch The Great Christmas Bake Off 2025 on Channel 4’s streaming service.
