The year 2026 has barely begun, but Robin has already caused significant problems for Batman. Bruce Wayne is extremely careful to protect his secret identity, working hard to maintain the public image of a wealthy playboy. He does this not only for his own safety, but to protect those around him – particularly his Robins – who would be in danger if anyone discovered he was Batman.

Batman has managed to keep his identities separate lately, which is fortunate because Bruce Wayne has been trying to get close to Dr. Annika Zeller, a new doctor at Arkham Towers. He’s hoping to learn more about her potentially dangerous “Crown of Storms” project. The recent issue of Batman comic shows their clumsy first date, complete with an unexpected visit from Robin. And in a surprising turn of events, Robin accidentally reveals something that could expose Batman’s secret identity.

Robin Calls Batman ‘Father’ at the Worst Possible Moment

In the latest issue of Batman, #5, Bruce Wayne picks up Annika for what might be a date, though they playfully debate whether it actually is. Their evening takes a dangerous turn when Annika is targeted by a group of sword-wielding motorcyclists. Bruce skillfully evades them, but the attackers keep coming. Adding to the chaos, a mysterious woman called Ojo also tries to harm Annika, making it clear others are after her as well.

Luckily, the Ojo defeats the motorcycle gang that was chasing Bruce and Annika, allowing them to escape. Bruce realizes Annika must have a bounty on her head because of her involvement with the Crown of Storms, so they rush to find a safe place. It’s not easy, and they attempt to reach a rooftop to hide from the Ojo. Amidst a playful argument about whether this is a date, Annika and Bruce seem to be connecting, but their moment is quickly ruined by the Ojo’s reappearance.

Bruce positioned himself between Annika and the Ojo, preparing for another confrontation with the mysterious villain. Just as the Ojo lunged at him, a powerful, electrified net sprang up, shocking her and forcing her to retreat. Robin arrived soon after, explaining he’d learned about the Ojo during his training with the League of Assassins. While chatting casually with Bruce, Damian instinctively called him ‘Father’. Unbeknownst to Robin, Annika overheard this, realizing Bruce was Damian’s dad.

Batman’s New Love Interest Can Put Things Together, So Now What?

Okay, Damian didn’t actually call Bruce ‘Batman,’ so there’s some wiggle room there. Plus, most people don’t know Robin is Bruce’s son, keeping things relatively secret. However, Annika definitely got a glimpse of Bruce’s true abilities during their date – the amazing driving and fighting skills were a dead giveaway he wasn’t just a carefree playboy. Bruce might have been able to explain those things away, but hearing Robin call Bruce ‘Father’ would likely lead Annika to figure out Bruce is Batman.

Things are really difficult right now. If anyone figures out Bruce is Batman, it puts his whole family in danger, but it’s particularly problematic because of his current investigation. He’s been trying to get close to Zeller, suspecting her Crown of Storms project might involve illegal testing on patients at Arkham Towers – a lead the Riddler gave him. Now that Annika has a reason to believe Bruce is hiding something, she’ll likely avoid him if she’s involved in anything secretive. Even that’s optimistic; she could easily become completely suspicious and cut him off entirely.

Annika doesn’t have concrete evidence that Bruce is Batman, but she has enough reasons to be wary. If something is wrong with the Crown of Storms, Bruce will need a different plan, as Annika absolutely won’t allow him to get close casually. Even if she means no harm, her knowledge of Bruce’s son being Robin could unravel his other secrets. While some dates are just bad, this one might be a disaster for Bruce.
