Zelda Williams does not approve of AI-generated tributes to her father.
As someone who really values authenticity and respecting legacies, I want to share something important. Robin Williams‘ daughter has asked fans to please stop creating and sharing AI-generated videos of her dad. She’s understandably upset by them, and it’s a really good reminder that even with amazing technology, some things deserve to remain untouched and honored in their original form. Let’s all respect her wishes and remember the real magic of Robin Williams’ work.
Zelda publicly asked people to stop sending her AI-generated videos of her father. In an Instagram Story posted on October 6th, she explained she has no interest in seeing these videos and doesn’t understand why people think she would. She added that if the intention is to upset her, it won’t work, and she’ll simply block those who continue to send them.
She emphasized that her father, who tragically took his own life in 2014 at age 63, would not have supported this. She specifically mentioned he wouldn’t have approved, and referenced the actor known for his role in *Mrs. Doubtfire*.
The director of *Lisa Frankenstein* pleaded, “Please, if you have any respect, just stop this—it’s hurting him, me, and everyone involved. It’s pointless, a waste of effort, and I assure you, it’s not what he would have wanted.”
Zelda feels strongly that using AI-generated images and videos for content is frustrating and harms the value of authentic work.
She accused him of creating something exploitative and artificial, not genuine art. She felt he was taking pieces of people’s lives and artistic history, twisting them into something unpleasant, and then forcing it on others just to get approval. She found the whole process deeply distasteful.
And Zelda’s feelings about AI go beyond her father’s image and likeness.
She pleaded with people to stop referring to AI as “the future.” She argued that AI simply rehashes and remixes existing content, creating a never-ending cycle of consumption. She likened it to a disturbing, repetitive loop where creators benefit while audiences endlessly consume recycled material.
Zelda Williams has often spoken out against the use of artificial intelligence in the entertainment industry. During the actors’ strike in October 2023, she expressed worry about Hollywood potentially using AI to replicate actors’ voices without their permission – a concern that was especially personal, as it related to the possibility of this happening to her late father.
Okay, so I have to admit, I’m *completely* biased when it comes to the SAG-AFTRA strike and the whole AI thing. It’s been terrifying to watch, honestly. For years, I’ve seen people trying to use AI to basically copy actors – to make digital versions of them without their permission. And it hits so close to home because it reminds me of my dad. This isn’t some distant, future problem, it’s happening *right now*, and it’s incredibly real and scary.
Zelda Williams has openly discussed how the many videos and photos fans have created as tributes to her father – who she and her brothers, Cody and Zak Williams, shared with their mothers, Marsha Garces and Elayne Boosler – have affected her process of grieving.
It breaks my heart, but honestly, sometimes it feels like I’m just… a statue to him. Everyone’s so sweet and shares all their love, which I *do* appreciate, truly. But it’s like they come to me to leave their feelings, get a little comfort knowing they’ve honored him, and then just… move on with their lives. It’s like I’m not a person, just a place to *leave* their love for him, you know? It’s a really strange feeling.
