The latest Batman film features Robin, but this isn’t the Robin most DC Comics fans know. For a short period, an unexpected character takes on the role of Batman’s sidekick. Batman first appeared in 1939, and Robin followed a year later in 1940. The two heroes have been linked ever since.
It’s surprising that many Batman films leave out Robin, considering how many different characters have played the role in the comics. Luckily, James Gunn’s new DC Universe plans to include a Robin more faithful to the comic books, along with the rest of the Bat-Family. But before that happens, another Batman-related project will show a Robin who’s quite different from the usual portrayal.
The Only Robin In Batman’s New Appearance Does Not Use That Name
Prime Video has added a new animated Batman series called Bat-Fam, and all 10 episodes are now available to stream. This show offers a fresh take on the Bat-Family, focusing on just one version of Robin. Instead of featuring multiple Robins like Dick Grayson, Jason Todd, and Tim Drake, the series stars Damian Wayne as the only Robin.
Interestingly, even Damian Wayne isn’t called Robin within the world of Bat-Fam. The series follows up on Merry Little Batman, a DC film that showed how Damian became Little Batman and took on his father’s role. This means both Damian and Bruce Wayne are Batman in Bat-Fam. Though fans of the animated movie already knew this, Robin does make an appearance in the series.
Here’s a surprising detail: in a playful scene at Wayne Manor, Alfred Pennyworth actually puts on the Robin costume, while Damian pretends to be a miniature Batman! The villain Ra’s al Ghul appears as the Joker within the game’s world. The story ends with a dark reference to Jason Todd’s death, as Ra’s al Ghul chillingly states, “Next time, let me kill Robin.”
DC Fans Will Get Their Robin Fix In Theaters Soon
Honestly, it felt like a missed opportunity seeing Alfred briefly in the Robin suit – it was the closest we got to actually seeing Robin in the show, especially for a series all about the Bat-Family! But I’m really relieved to hear that DC is finally giving us proper Robin appearances in the upcoming Batman movies. It’s great that we’ll get to see him on the big screen soon!
The upcoming DCU film, The Brave and the Bold, will center around Bruce Wayne discovering he has a son named Damian, who is a key figure within the “Bat-Family.” Fans can also expect to see multiple Robins on screen with the animated Dynamic Duo, which will feature both Dick Grayson and Jason Todd. This means Batman fans will get plenty of Robin content in theaters soon.
