James Gunn didn’t reveal how Rocket Raccoon and Groot first met in the Marvel movies, and fans are hoping he’ll do better with a similar origin story in his new DC Universe. Though Rocket and Groot were already a team when they appeared in the first *Guardians of the Galaxy* in 2014, Gunn’s last Marvel film, *Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3*, didn’t show us how they became partners. Now, with his new DC projects, there’s another character history fans are eager to see, but Gunn might choose to keep it a secret.
James Gunn revealed in an interview with Brandon Davis on *The Morning After* podcast that there’s a hidden history behind the character Weasel. Gunn knows Weasel’s origins, though he isn’t sure how it connects to the events in *Creature Commandos*. He described Weasel’s backstory as a major surprise and wasn’t sure if he’d ever have the chance to share it. However, Gunn hinted that Weasel’s past could be explored at some point within the DC Universe.
When Could James Gunn Show Us Weasel’s Origin Story in the DCU?
Weasel made his debut in James Gunn’s 2021 film, *The Suicide Squad*. Sean Gunn voiced the quirky character, and later reprised the role for the animated series *Creature Commandos*, the first show in the new DC Universe. *Creature Commandos* revealed Weasel’s backstory: he was wrongly sent to Belle Reve prison after being accused of killing children at Sunnyhill School. In reality, he had been trying to save his friends when humans caused their deaths – a heartbreaking story. However, this wasn’t actually how Weasel originally came to be.
Even though James Gunn has spoken about the DC Universe’s direction, there’s still a chance we’ll learn more about Weasel’s past before he arrived at Sunnyhill School. This is particularly likely now that a second season of *Creature Commandos* is planned. Since Weasel will return in *Creature Commandos* season 2 as part of Task Force M, the show could reveal his origins. It remains to be seen if the DCU version of Weasel will have the same history as the character from the DC Comics.
First appearing in 1985’s *The Fury of Firestorm #35*, John Monroe, known as “Weasel,” was a Stanford University student in the 1960s. He was bullied as a child due to his small size, which led him down a dark path, ultimately becoming a delusional serial killer who also worked as a teacher. He created a lightweight, clawed fur suit to target and kill those who had tormented him. While the DC Universe version of Weasel appears different – not a person in a suit – fans hope James Gunn will delve into the character’s hidden past and reveal the heartbreaking truth behind this complex villain.
