ROG Ally X gets even better when installed into this sweet new dBrand gaming handheld accessory

What you need to know

  • ASUS ROG Ally X is a powerful Windows 11 gaming handheld that released in July 2024.
  • Due to its slightly thicker form factor, the Ally X doesn’t fit into many form-fitting accessories designed for the original ROG Ally.
  • Today, dBrand released two new Killswitch Case Kits designed specifically for Ally X.
  • The Essential Kit sells for $59.95 and comes with a rubber protective case with a kickstand, a microSD card holder, and a customizable skin.
  • The Travel Kit sells for $74.95 and comes with everything in the Essential Kit plus a travel cover and stick grips.

As someone who has been in the gaming scene for quite some time now, I can confidently say that the dBrand Killswitch Case Kits for the ASUS ROG Ally X have made a significant impact on my gaming handheld experience. Having reviewed the original dBrand Killswitch for ROG Ally and the one for Steam Deck, I was eager to get my hands on these new kits designed specifically for the improved Ally X.

As a researcher who recently delved into the world of gaming with ASUS’ revamped ROG Ally X, released in July 2024 (as per my ROG Ally X review), I must say it’s an impressive piece of hardware. However, much like any device, the user experience can be optimized with the right accessories. Unfortunately, due to minor design changes such as thickness and port arrangement, many accessories designed for the original Ally are incompatible with the enhanced model.

Great news! The latest Killswitch Case from dBrand is now available for the ROG Ally X, designed specifically to fit the updated model, providing enhanced convenience during usage.

The Ally X Killswitch Case comes in two options: Essential Kit or Travel Kit. For $59.95, the Essential Kit provides a rubber, custom-fit case that enhances grip on the device and features a convenient kickstand at the back. It also includes a slot for a microSD card and allows you to pick from various stylish dBrand skins to personalize your handheld.

Simultaneously, the $74.95 Travel Kit offers all items from the Essential Kit plus extra stick grips, designed for easy attachment onto joysticks, increasing their size and responsiveness. Furthermore, this kit equips you with a durable travel case that fits snugly over the ROG Ally X screen to shield it during transportation.

Should you wish, you have the option to buy the Essential Kit first, followed by selecting additional items like the Travel Cover for $14.95, stick grips for $9.95, or a tempered glass screen protector for $19.95 individually at your convenience.

An accessory that adds protection and convenience

Previously, I conducted a review for the dBrand Killswitch designed specifically for the ROG Ally, and one of my coworkers owns the same accessory for the Steam Deck. From our experiences, we can confirm that these kits are crafted with premium materials and significantly enhance our handheld gaming experiences. Consequently, it’s plausible to anticipate that the new dBrand Killswitch kits for the ROG Ally X will be similarly impressive.

One aspect I appreciate in the Killswitch case is its slightly rugged feel, providing a secure hold on my high-value gadget. This texture minimizes the risk of it slipping, even when my hands are damp due to intense gaming sessions against tough opponents. Moreover, it has openings that enable ventilation and access to ports and controls as needed. To add to its utility, it comes with a kickstand, making it simple to position my ROG Ally almost anywhere for effortless viewing of shows or YouTube videos without needing extra props to prop it up – very handy indeed!

The Travel Kit’s protective shell, fitted at the front of the ROG Ally, securely locks into place. A gentle push is all that’s needed to remove it, but it won’t budge on its own while traveling. This means I can confidently stow my gaming handheld in a backpack or suitcase without worrying about damage to the screen and joysticks during journeys. One of the advantages of this feature is that the ROG Ally occupies less space than it would with a larger carrying case.

So, what do I think about the customizable skins? I’m personally averse to putting adhesive stickers on my devices, but there’s no denying that the patterns and designs offered by dBrand are well-made and will help your device stand out if you want to apply them. There are plenty of options to choose from, so you’ll most likely be able to find something you like. The stick grips are equally simple to install and do a good job of making the Ally respond faster to my movements since they offer a larger and more textured surface to work with.

The one thing to be aware of is that the Killswitch fits very tightly on gaming handhelds. Obviously, this is by design to provide a more protective layer that doesn’t fall off. However, this means it takes effort to install the Killswitch, and it can be difficult to remove. So, if you think you’ll frequently want to take the Ally X out of its protective casing, then you might want to get a different accessory. Otherwise, this is a fantastic peripheral the ROG Ally X owners should definitely consider.
