More than nine years since the premiere of “Rogue One: A Star Wars Story,” director Gareth Edwards reminisces about his Star Wars legacy with a witty reference to the prequel trilogy era, in an interview with GamesRadar+ for his upcoming film “Jurassic World Rebirth.” Looking back on his time in the distant galaxy, he expressed gratitude that fans still admire “Rogue One,” sparing him any unwanted attention from them during his everyday life. Edwards also pondered over a movie’s longevity, noting its resilience as it continues to resonate even after several years since its debut.
Edwards expressed that he’s deeply grateful he doesn’t have people reminding him of ruining their childhood by crossing the street. It feels somewhat similar to [Jurassic World: Genesis]. To be honest, he dislikes terms like ‘franchise’ and ‘IP’. These phrases seem to trivialize… In his opinion, these movies were almost spiritual experiences for him as a child, watching them, and they hold significant meaning.
Speaking as a passionate cinephile, I’ve always believed, and it’s not an exaggeration when I say this about my own work, that the true measure of a movie isn’t its initial reception but how it resonates years down the line. Of course, there’s excitement surrounding what audiences might think when a film premieres, but looking back at my heroes like John Carpenter, they faced similar challenges. For instance, remember ‘The Thing’, which was initially met with disappointment? Today, it’s hailed as a masterpiece. It just goes to show that sometimes, greatness takes time to be recognized.
Over time, the Star Wars prequel trilogy has gained more acceptance, but when they were initially released between 1999 and 2005, they sparked much debate among fans. Many older viewers who had grown up with the original trilogy felt that George Lucas tarnished their childhood experience, as the prequels failed to meet the enchantment of the first three films in their eyes.
Instead of being a direct prequel to “Star Wars: A New Hope,” as many might know, the movie “Rogue One” was a daring spinoff that introduced an entirely new group of characters. Despite this risk, it’s widely appreciated by fans as one of the best Star Wars films during the Disney era. The esteem in which “Rogue One” is held has grown further due to the success of the critically acclaimed series “Star Wars: Andor,” which wrapped up its two-season run on Disney+ recently. By leading directly into “Rogue One,” “Andor” sheds new light on crucial elements from that film and adds depth to them.
Just like the Star Wars prequel trilogy stirred up controversy among fans, Disney’s Star Wars films have also sparked debate, with directors J.J. Abrams and Rian Johnson possibly hearing their fair share of criticism while walking down the street. However, Gareth Edwards is fortunate he avoided such backlash since Rogue One had the potential to go off course, especially considering reports of extensive rewrites and reshoots that altered character development and action scenes. If Rogue One had failed, Star Wars fans would have been quite displeased, particularly because the film attempts to rewrite parts of A New Hope, revealing the origin of the Death Star’s famous weakness. Modifying such a revered story was a risky move, but Rogue One might have made A New Hope an even more compelling film by emphasizing the bravery and sacrifice of the Rebellion.
It’s likely that viewers will share a similar sentiment towards “Jurassic World Rebirth”, aiming to recapture the sense of awe and wonder found in the initial “Jurassic Park”. Though early responses to “Rebirth” have been varied, it has potential to become an enjoyable sequel due to its impressive dinosaur action. Even if current opinions on “Jurassic World Rebirth” are scattered, this doesn’t necessarily mean they’ll stay that way. As stated by Edwards and demonstrated by the Star Wars prequels, a film can undergo reevaluation years after its premiere.
