‘Rogue One’ Director’s 2023 Sci-Fi Disappointment Is Making a Comeback on Streaming

I just finished watching this incredible sci-fi movie, and I can see why everyone’s talking about it! It’s seriously one of the most visually stunning action films I’ve ever seen. You know how sci-fi often relies on a lot of special effects to create those futuristic worlds? Well, this movie nails it. It came out in 2023 and even though it’s not perfect, the visuals are breathtaking. It stars John David Washington – you might remember him from Tenet – and this time he’s in a really unique sci-fi setting. It basically reimagines the Vietnam War with AI robots and some seriously world-ending technology. It’s called The Creator, and it’s currently all over my streaming feed – I highly recommend checking it out!

The sci-fi action movie The Creator is a hit on Prime Video, currently ranking as the eighth most popular film on the platform’s US weekly chart. The Tank, a World War II movie, is number one, followed by the Naked Gun reboot starring Liam Neeson, and Sinners directed by Ryan Coogler. Directed by Gareth Edwards, who also made Rogue One and Godzilla, The Creator boasts stunning visuals – and it’s no surprise it received an Oscar nomination for Best Visual Effects in 2024.

Following a devastating nuclear attack on the US caused by robots, humans have turned against all artificial intelligence, sparking a global war. Now, a skilled mercenary named Joshua, played by John David Washington, is sent on a dangerous mission to find the elusive Creator – the brilliant mind behind the AI that could destroy the world. The film also stars Gemma Chan, Ken Watanabe, Allison Janney, Ralph Ineson, Benedict Wong, and Amar Chadha-Patel. Here’s what the movie is about:

Gareth Edwards, the director behind films like “Rogue One” and “Godzilla,” brings us a thrilling sci-fi action movie set in a future war between humans and artificial intelligence. John David Washington plays Joshua, a former special forces soldier haunted by the loss of his wife, Gemma Chan. He’s given a dangerous mission: find and eliminate the Creator, the brilliant mind behind the AI and the creator of a weapon that could end the war – and humanity. Joshua and his team venture deep into enemy territory, only to discover the devastating weapon isn’t what they expected – it’s an AI taking the form of a young child, played by newcomer Madeleine Yuna Voyles.

‘The Creator’ Bombed at the Box Office

Despite having all the right ingredients – a talented director like Gareth Edwards (known for Rogue One: A Star Wars Story), a popular lead actor in John David Washington, and a fresh, original sci-fi story – the movie The Creator was a box office disappointment. It only earned $104 million worldwide, while costing around $80 million to make. Considering the added costs of marketing, the studio likely lost money on the film.

Even though not many people went to see it, The Creator received generally positive reviews. It has a 67% rating on Rotten Tomatoes, and audiences seem to like it even more, giving it a score of 75%. Most reviews gave the film three or four out of five stars, though some called it a perfect five-star movie. One viewer wrote, “This movie was very well done. I wasn’t expecting so much emotion in an action movie,” and another said, “A must-see! I’d never heard of this film before today, and as a huge sci-fi fan, it’s now my all-time favorite.”
