Science fiction is a popular genre, but its success can be unpredictable. While some sci-fi movies are immediate hits with critics and audiences, others find a wider audience after their initial release. A critically praised sci-fi film directed by the director of Rogue One: A Star Wars Story is about to get that second chance, becoming available on Netflix on March 20th.
Released in 2023, the sci-fi film The Creator was directed by Gareth Edwards, who previously helmed the successful films Godzilla and Rogue One. While critics and audiences generally liked The Creator, it didn’t perform as well financially, earning $104.3 million worldwide on an $80 million budget. Now, three years later, the film is becoming available on Netflix, potentially reaching a wider audience and gaining renewed attention.
The Creator Is a Gorgeous Film With a Controversial Take on AI

Though released only three years ago, The Creator arrived at a moment when our understanding of AI – and the conversations around it – were very different. The film depicts a future where an AI-triggered nuclear explosion devastates Los Angeles, sparking a war between humans and artificial intelligence. Fifteen years later, Sergeant Joshua Taylor (John David Washington), a member of special forces, discovers Alphie (Madeleine Yuna Voyles), an AI child with abilities that could potentially end the conflict. However, when Taylor uncovers a troubling conspiracy, he decides to protect Alphie instead of eliminating her. The movie presents a compelling and ambitious storyline, raising thought-provoking questions about who truly poses the greatest danger. It doesn’t shy away from depicting the harsh realities of warfare and acknowledges that humans aren’t always blameless – or even correct.
The idea of humans being the villains in an AI story is interesting, but it might not resonate with many viewers right now. As AI becomes more common in our lives – turning science fiction into reality – people’s feelings about it have become more mixed. It could be hard to convince audiences to see AI as the one being harmed. Despite this, The Creator is a beautiful film to watch. Director Edwards has created a stunning, though somewhat dark, vision of the near future, and the film’s visual effects were even recognized with two Academy Award nominations.
What Else is Coming to Netflix in March?
Netflix is adding a variety of movies this month, including the sci-fi film The Creator. While there isn’t a huge amount of science fiction coming to the platform in March, fans of genre entertainment will still have plenty to watch. The entire Saw franchise will be available starting March 19th, and horror fans are in for a treat with the addition of two Stephen King adaptations: Misery and Stephen King’s Sleepwalkers.
