Last One Laughing quickly became a surprise hit when it premiered on Prime Video last year. It spread by word-of-mouth faster than anything we’ve seen at TopMob. The show has a simple but clever premise: ten of the UK’s funniest comedians are put in a room and challenged to avoid laughing.
To mark the show’s comeback, we invited comedian and co-host Roisin Conaty to share her ten favorite funny movies and TV shows.
From classic 1970s stand-up routines to the sitcom Roisin credits as the inspiration for Gogglebox, this is a collection of shows guaranteed to make you laugh. What will you be watching first?
1. Withnail & I
This comedy is my absolute favorite movie. I actually use it to gauge whether I’ll connect with other people – if they don’t enjoy it, we probably won’t click. I even used to have the whole thing memorized and would recite along with the characters!
I first watched this film at 18 while at my friend Ollie’s house, and we ended up watching it repeatedly – especially after getting high. It’s a movie that really improves with each viewing, as you pick up on more of its themes as you get older – like that line about hippie wigs in Woolworths. It’s brilliant! And I firmly believe Richard E. Grant deserved an Oscar for his performance; I don’t think anyone could have played the part better in Withnail & I. Just my opinion!
2. Curb Your Enthusiasm

Larry David is a comedic genius, and I absolutely love his show. It’s hilariously awkward – he perfectly voices the thoughts many of us have but would never actually say. What’s really impressive is how original it is, especially coming from the creator of Seinfeld. To have another huge success after that is just incredible.
3. Keeping Up Appearances
As a total film and TV buff, this sitcom really stuck with me. Honestly, I don’t think anyone has ever been funnier on television – Patricia Routledge’s physical comedy in this show is just unmatched. It’s a masterclass in comedic timing and expression!
Even though she repeats some bits throughout the show – like her funny stumble on the way to her brother-in-law’s – it always makes me laugh. Her character is just naturally hilarious, and her performance is perfect.
4. Major Payne
I first saw this movie around when I was fourteen, and it’s not super popular here, which is a shame! Damon Wayans plays the main character – a former soldier dealing with PTSD – and he’s tasked with training a group of young cadets, but he’s totally unprepared for the job. Honestly, it’s hilariously offensive, and I have such great memories of watching it over and over again one summer while I was in Ireland. It’s a really fun movie!
5. Only Fools and Horses

It’s a really smart show, and you can watch it whenever you want – we always do! And, not to brag, it’s similar to ‘Last One Laughing’ in that it’s a great pick-me-up when you’re feeling down.
6. Seinfeld
I didn’t appreciate Seinfeld when it first aired – it just didn’t click with me. But when I revisited it in my twenties, I was blown away. The writing is incredible, and there’s a huge amount of content. You always discover new jokes and it’s consistently hilarious. I’m a big fan.
7. Blossom
I remember watching the first episode, and she just delivers this amazing monologue straight to the camera, like she’s hosting a late-night show. Honestly, it really sparked my interest in trying stand-up comedy. It’s a truly brilliant show, but for some reason, people don’t talk about it much. What’s cool is that it was actually written by some of the folks from Saturday Night Live!
8. Richard Pryor: Live and Smokin’
This is Richard Pryor’s very first stand-up performance, and you can find it on YouTube. It was filmed while the audience was still getting settled – something you’d never see today because of how expensive these specials are to produce! I consider it the greatest stand-up special ever made, and I recommend it to anyone interested in comedy. Pryor brilliantly gives each part of his body its own unique personality. It’s raw and simple in its production, but incredibly smart and fun to watch.
9. Blades of Glory
This comedy is one of my all-time favorites. It’s just incredibly funny, and Will Ferrell is fantastic. Amy Poehler is brilliant too – there’s a hilarious scene with her and Will Arnett attempting to climb an escalator while wearing ice-skates that’s a perfect example of physical comedy.
I’d also recommend the Will Ferrell movie The Other Guys. The scene where they attempt the good cop/bad cop routine in the office is hilarious. Mark Wahlberg is fantastic in it – his comedic timing is really unique and spot-on.
10. The Royle Family
It’s incredibly well-made, and it seems so easy and natural, even though a lot of effort clearly went into it. It’s heartwarming without being overly sentimental. It’s become a Christmas tradition for us – we’ll always make time to watch it and the holiday specials.
