It’s that familiar time of year – gifts from Black Friday are being wrapped, decorations are coming out, and people are planning their holiday movie marathons. Movie fans are also starting to compile their “best films of the year” lists, and Ryan Coogler’s popular 2025 horror film, Sinners, is expected to be on many of them. However, when one of the first “best of” lists appeared online, it surprisingly left Sinners out, and fans have been quick to express their disappointment.
Recently, Rolling Stone published its list of the best movies of the year, and Sinners didn’t make the cut—though it did receive an honorable mention. Despite this, it’s not because the magazine ignores horror; their list actually included several scary movies, like the well-received Weapons.
Paul Thomas Anderson’s film, One Battle After Another, was ranked number one. Other notable selections include Frankenstein on Netflix and Ari Aster’s thriller Eddington, which was made during the COVID-19 pandemic. Below is the full list, starting with number 20 and counting down to number one.
Weapons (Zach Cregger)
Frankenstein (Guillermo del Toro)
Caught by the Tides (Jia Zhangke)
The Phoenician Scheme (Wes Anderson)
On Becoming a Guinea Fowl (Rungano Nyoni)
Orwell: 2+2=5 (Raoul Peck)
Best Wishes to All (Yûta Shimotsu)
Universal Language (Matthew Rankin)
Eddington (Ari Aster)
Peter Hujar’s Day (Ira Sachs)
Sentimental Value (Joachim Trier)
Marty Supreme (Josh Safdie)
Sorry, Baby (Eva Victor)
No Other Choice (Park Chan-wook)
It Was Just an Accident (Jafar Panahi)
Nouvelle Vague (Richard Linklater)
Train Dreams (Clint Bentley)
Black Bag (Steven Soderbergh)
Hamnet (Chloé Zhao)
One Battle After Another (Paul Thomas Anderson)
Rolling Stone’s ‘Sinners’ Omission Has Horror Fans Snarling
After Rolling Stone released its list of top horror films, fans of Ryan Coogler’s film Sinners quickly took to social media to express their disappointment that it wasn’t included. Sinners is unusual in that both critics and general audiences loved it – it currently boasts a 97% critics’ score and a 96% audience score on Rotten Tomatoes. Many users on X echoed this sentiment, questioning why the film was left off the list and even doubting the judgment of the list’s editor, David Fear. One commenter was even a well-known actor from the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
