A project from Romero Games, the studio co-founded by John Romero – a key creator of Doom – has been saved after facing some difficulties. Romero announced at a video game event in Madrid that while the project has undergone significant changes, it’s back on track, according to a report by Eurogamer.
Romero explained that the project has undergone a major redesign, to the point where it’s almost entirely different from its original form. However, it still includes many of the core ideas from the initial game. He emphasized that the team isn’t starting over completely; instead, they’re carefully integrating useful parts of the old project into the new version.
According to Romero, they’re not building this game from scratch. They can reuse assets and ideas from previous projects for a new indie game. They have plenty of existing content to work with, and while the overall design is changing significantly, the team is enthusiastic about the new direction.
He explained that the game is now significantly smaller in scope due to the redesign. However, development has become more enjoyable for the team, as more people from across the studio are involved. He noted that many of the people currently working on the game are department heads who previously didn’t have the opportunity to work directly on the code or design, but now they do.
He explained that small teams allow people to focus on their strengths, which is why they’re so effective.
Honestly, Romero didn’t give us a ton of specifics about the new game, but he did hint at something really cool. He said it’s going to be a shooter, and then compared the feeling of playing it to discovering Elden Ring for the first time – like it’ll offer a completely fresh experience. That got me super excited! It sounds like it’s going to be something unlike anything we’ve played before.
The game aims to capture a sense of wonder and discovery, like being in a strange and exciting new world where everything feels unfamiliar. We want players to feel that same curiosity and ask ‘What is that?’ as they explore.
Brenda Romero, CEO of Romero Games, first announced the game’s cancellation in July. Although she didn’t reveal the game’s title, she said development was progressing smoothly and meeting all publisher expectations. Despite the cancellation, Romero Games confirmed it would remain open.
Romero Games recently responded to some inaccurate reports about the studio. They wanted to clarify the situation and share the correct information.
Unfortunately, our project lost its funding and the game has been cancelled. We can’t reveal which publisher made the decision due to legal agreements, but people might be able to figure it out from news and other public sources. This means we now need to review the size and structure of our team.
