Ron Perlman is known for many roles, but he’s particularly loved for playing Hellboy in the 2004 and 2008 films. He’s also a familiar voice in the Fallout video game series. He narrated the beginning and end of five Fallout games, and he voiced two characters within the games: Butch Harris in the first title, and a newscaster in both Fallout 4 and Fallout 76. His work has become a signature part of the entire series.
Beginning in 2024, Amazon Prime Video revived the Fallout story with a new live-action series featuring Ella Purnell, Walton Goggins, Kyle MacLachlan, Aaron Moten, and many other well-known actors. Because Ron Perlman is so closely associated with the original story, fans were eager to see him involved in the new series, but it didn’t quite work out that way.
I was really fascinated to hear Walton Goggins – I mean, Perlman – talk at MegaCon 2026. He was chatting with Joe Deckelmeier about how he got involved with the live-action Fallout series. He mentioned he played a Super Mutant in one scene of Season 2 – a character who might come back, he hinted! He also reminisced about how he originally joined the Fallout franchise for very little money, and how quickly the games blew up and became a massive success. It was amazing to hear him talk about the whole journey.
It’s been completely surreal. I never imagined anything I worked on would become so successful. I started with the first ‘Fallout’ for just $40 and a sandwich. Then, a year and a half later, I was asked to do the second game and discovered it had become the best-selling game of the year. After that came the third, fourth, fifth, and sixth installments. Now, Amazon is creating a massive, high-budget live-action TV series based on the game. It’s all been incredibly unexpected, going from that initial $40 and a sandwich to this.

He later had the chance to speak at the Saturn Awards, where he sat with the show’s main producers and several of the actors. He playfully joked about not being cast in the series, making it clear he wasn’t upset – even while lightheartedly mentioning his exclusion from the show during his speech.
So, I was asked to present an award at the Saturn Awards – it’s a yearly event, held on a Saturday, that celebrates science fiction and horror. It’s basically a lunch banquet with about sixteen people per table. Two years ago, I got invited to present, and honestly, I just thought it meant a free lunch! Turns out, I was presenting to the team behind ‘Fallout,’ which was amazing. I ended up sitting at a table with the entire creative team, including Geneva and Jamie Nolan, plus some of the actors. I was a little annoyed because they had already started filming the series and hadn’t even called me! But they’re great people, and we were having a really good time. Then, when I went onstage to present the award, I jokingly mentioned, ‘My phone never even rang!’ – it was the first curse word of the afternoon.
Perlman, who was a key part of the original video games, said the show’s creators reached out to him immediately after the live-action series was announced. He jokingly described his role as a small ‘teaser’ – like a tiny appetizer – hinting at how limited his screen time was. While he’s unsure if he’ll be back for future seasons, he acknowledged that in the entertainment industry, anything is possible, a lesson he’s learned over the years.
I immediately grabbed everyone’s attention. Honestly, despite being friendly with these people – I’d been having lunch with them – they’d been working hard since the show was approved, trying to find a way to include me. They were hesitant to offer me a role unless they could come up with something really good, and it took them a while to figure it out. They’d made that decision long before I was asked to present their awards, but I was completely unaware. We filmed a short scene, almost like a little teaser or free sample. It wasn’t originally planned, and no one seemed to expect it. It was just a quick taste of what could be. Now, it’s uncertain what will happen next. It could be a one-time appearance – I’ve seen that happen before – but we’ll have to wait and see.
I was thrilled to hear Fallout is getting a Season 3! While we don’t know what’s coming story-wise just yet, I’m really hoping we see more of Walton Goggins’ character. He was so integral to building the world of Fallout from the start, and I’d love to see him get even more screen time and development in the future.
Both seasons of Fallout are available to stream on Amazon Prime Video.
